I tried to order the $179 refurbished HD TiVo with lifetime subscription from tivo.com the other day, and was told that I couldn't have the multi-service discount (even though I already have an existing series 2 with lifetime subscription) because the TiVo I was buying was discounted. Does that make sense to anyone?
If I were to change that lifetime to a monthly, and then once I have the box, I go and cancel the monthly and buy the lifetime, would I then qualify for the multi-service discount?

After a year of paying TiVo monthly that would work OK.

Let me get this straight...
You tried to order a TiVo HD with Lifetime, and they told you that you can't have the multi-service discount because you already have a Lifetime TiVo.
Ummm...
A discount on WHAT?
If you got the HD with Lifetime, you'd be paid up permanently and there'd BE no monthly subscription on that machine either, so nothing to discount.

No MSD prices are listed as part of the deal, why expect to get something that's not part of the deal?

MULTI-SERVICE DISCOUNT for new subscriptions only. Beginning July 19, 2007, the MULTI-SERVICE DISCOUNT will ONLY be applied to eligible new TiVo service subscriptions (defined below). The MULTI-SERVICE DISCOUNT cannot be applied to existing TiVo service subscriptions. For purposes of clarity, this means, for example, that if you have an existing full-priced monthly service plan and then purchase a prepaid plan to the TiVo service, the MULTI-SERVICE DISCOUNT cannot be applied to your existing full-priced monthly service plan, only future new eligible TiVo service subscriptions (defined below). Existing TiVo service plans are not eligible for the MULTI-SERVICE DISCOUNT. However, TiVo service subscriptions currently receiving the MULTI-SERVICE DISCOUNT shall continue to receive the MULTI-SERVICE DISCOUNT as long as there remains a Qualifying Subscription on the same TiVo customer account.

You must have an account that you are paying a full monthly, annual, or 3 year service for. Lifetime service plan's do not count under the multi service discount.
This isn't true, unless I'm not understanding what you are saying or the policy changed.
My parents have a lifetime TiVo that counts as the primary TiVo and their other 3 boxes are charged the discounted rate.

TiVo Service Subscription: A Qualifying Subscription must be a current monthly, annual, prepaid, or Product Lifetime Service plan to the TiVo service, as further defined below, made directly with TiVo Inc. (as opposed to with a third party service provider such as DIRECTV) in order to qualify for the MULTI-SERVICE DISCOUNT. For instance, DIRECTV DVRs with the TiVo service are ineligible to qualify as a Qualifying Subscription or to receive the MULTI-SERVICE DISCOUNT.

He cannot have the MSD prices for service, because the deal the hardware was purchased with excludes that.

3 years you've been here yet this is post 4? Don't feed the Troll.
The reason why the OP is being denied MSD is because he got a subsidy on his purchase price, and now TiVo is making that money back by requring the full subscription payment. This used to be the case where people were getting cheap TiVos in exchange for up to $20 a month for service on short contracts.
Nothing to do with having lifetime on a previous box... if he paid full retail for his new TiVo, he could call the full-priced lifetime the first box and pay MSD rates for the new one.

From Tivo's definition of multi-service discount qualifications:
TiVo Service Subscription: A Qualifying Subscription must be a current monthly, annual, prepaid, or Product Lifetime Service plan to the TiVo service, as further defined below, made directly with TiVo Inc. (as opposed to with a third party service provider such as DIRECTV) in order to qualify for the MULTI-SERVICE DISCOUNT.
and
Product Lifetime Service. If you are the registered account holder of a Product Lifetime Service plan, your Product Lifetime Service must be fully paid and in good standing. Your TiVo DVR to which the Product Lifetime Service is attached must have called into the TiVo service within the last 180 days to remain eligible for the MULTI-SERVICE DISCOUNT.
Also, for the original poster, the follow line is in the fine print at the bottom of the page with the refurbished units:
Multi-service discount pricing does not apply to Web Specials.

I don't buy it. If I lifetime my Series 3 that I paid $699 for, for $399, my Series 2 $6.95 MSD 3 year commitment will be null and void?
I've never heard of this policy....

sales will make exceptions there is no longer a 6.95 msd. so if you buy a new one it will more than likely be 9.99. the policies change.

The refurbs on tivos site are not a good deal because of the policy except for new customers. For the $100 difference you might as well buy a new unit with discounted lifetime.

Yep. If you qualify for MSD a new TiVo HD with lifetime from tivo.com is $30 cheaper than the refurb with lifetime.

How does someone get a service discount on a TiVo that's also Lifetimed?
The OP has one TiVo that's Lifetimed but also wanted to buy another.
If you buy a second machine but don't go monthly (instead going for Lifetime) how would there be a discount on a non-existant monthly or yearly rate?

Yes, this is the deal. Tivo emailed a few months back that if I added another Tivo to my TivoHd (with Lifetime), I could buy Lifetime for $299.

Yep. If you qualify for MSD a new TiVo HD with lifetime from tivo.com is $30 cheaper than the refurb with lifetime.
I agree there is no significant financial reason to get a refurb HD if you want to put lifetime on it, since the costs involved are very close to a new HD with Lifetime using the MSD.
However, I do not understand how you calculated that a new TiVo HD with lifetime from tivo.com is $30 cheaper than the refurb with lifetime.
New TiVoHD with lifetime from tivo.com (MSD Lifetime)
Hardware Cost $299
Lifetime Cost $299
Total $598
Refurb TiVoHD with lifetime from tivo.com (Full priced lifetime)
Hardware Cost $180
Lifetime Cost $399
Total Cost $579
Isn't the refurbished unit $19 less expensive than a new unit?

Question had been asked, and plainly at that.
"A discount on WHAT?
"If you got the HD with Lifetime, you'd be paid up permanently and there'd BE no monthly subscription on that machine either, so nothing to discount."
The answer would apparently have been "A discount to the price of Lifetime."

I ordered a refurbished Tivo HD. When I inquired about the lifetime service, it was $399, even though I had a Tivo Series 2 active already.
However, when I checked the tivo website today, it gives me the multi-service option of upgrading the lifetime service for $299.
I know I sound like a weasel, but what happens if I order the lifetime service for the Tivo HD online for $299, and then decide to cancel the service of the Series 2? Will they automatically charge the $100 difference?
I've had the Tivo Series 2 for over a year, so I don't have any more commitments with it.

No, they won't charge you for $100 later.

What do you mean by upgrading? Are you buying the lifetime in addition to the service you purchased with the unit?

What about buying lifetime on the HD, canceling the series 2, then transfering the remaining part of the service that was bought with the HD to the series 2?

I bought my Tivo HD within the last 30 days. Therefore, I can change the current plan I have ($12.95 a month, with a mandatory 1 year commitment) to either an annual plan ($99 per year) or a lifetime service of $299. These prices are b/c of the multi-service deal.

I'm not going to use the series 2 at all.
EDIT:
Although the website order (and online receipt) states that the cost is $299, the email receipt I got was for $399. There is a glitch somewhere.
I'll call tomorrow to cancel the Series 2. I hope they don't give me a hard time.

Are you sure they will let you do that with the refurbished units? I see where you can cancel within the 30-day period, but since it was a package deal, you normally have to return the unit to Tivo.

In my edited post I stated that it was not possible. Although the online receipt is for $299, the email receipt and the order history show it's for $399.
