I have an HDTV (Sony 40Z4100) connected to a TiVo Series 3 via the HDMI cable that came with the TiVo. I have an older receiver, but am looking at getting a new one (one that would have multiple optical inputs and multiple HDMI inputs, for a variety of other components). I know that HDMI carries the digital and audio signals, and right now I just am using the HDMI cable, so it is carrying both signals to be output through the television itself.

When I get a new receiver, and want to use the HDMI cable, what is the best way to output audio with the receiver? Unfortunately, the TiVo's guides/manuals are not very detailed in this regard, so I'm a little confused on this.

Thank you.

Your TV should have an audio output for whatever source is currently selected on the TV. Also, the Series 3 has optical audio out, so you can just plug that straight into your receiver. It shouldn't matter that you're using HDMI, it should still output audio through the other audio ports.

Hope this helps!

Also I'm glad to hear your Series 3 has good HDMI image quality, the color is washed out on mine, so I have use the component outputs.

Note that some receivers with HDMI inputs are strictly pass-thru switching only, and require a separate digital audio connection between the receiver and the component. Others will pull the digital audio signal from the HDMI stream. You will need to check the receiver's owner's manual or ask a knowledgeable A/V professional to see which it will do.
