View Full Version : Re-encoding TiVo's 1080i MPEG files?

This isn't really a problem with my TiVo itself, more like with the files it creates.

What does everyone use to re-encode their 1080i TiVo MPEGs to something like MP4 for the AppleTV or iPod? I use VisualHub normally and I force VLC decoding in the advanced settings so I don't get the distorted audio. I can encode the 720p files just fine, but it always crashes when trying to encode the 1080i broadcasts, guessing they're just too big. I have a great computer that can handle HD encoding and things like that, so I'm guessing it's the software.

Just to be clear, I can transfer and decode the .tivo files fine, just having problems converting the resulting MPEG 1080i files to another format. 720p files convert fine to any format I choose.

Is there some nifty tool out there that I am missing?

You might try AutoMKV. Not sure if Apple TV or iPod can play MKV files, but AutoMKV does allow you to save the interim files so you could use something else to mux the raw video/audio after the conversion.

I haven't tried it with Tivo files, but I have used it to re-encode other 1080 sources.
