EDIT : This thread was started with a subject of " Playing music on THD v/s. S2 " but has been renamed as the issue is not just music.

If this has already been discussed please point me to that thread.

When playing music on my THD the audio breaks if I am also browsing thru folders which store my music on PC. This does not happen if I play music on my S2. Source for music is same PC and both Tivos are hard wired and on the same switch.

Have you experienced the same? Is there a fix?

I've never experienced this problem on my S3 or THD, which also use the same router. Do you have other network traffic while you are using your THD? Is your THD experiencing any other problems?

Like Drew00001, I've never seen this on my S3's or THD. However, I ran a test for you.

Just had my S2 AND my THD playing music at the same time I was browsing through the music folders on the PC which is serving up the music. No impact whatsoever. Music was rock solid. This was with an older P4 1.8GHz PC acting as the server.

Were you browsing on the PC (in windows explorer) or on THD using Tivo interface? I was talking about browsing using Tivo interface.

I thought about this whole thing and the only difference in two is that THD is connected via HDMI and S2 is not.

THD works fine other than this issue.

Just reran the test browsing on the TiVo interface. No impact. Still rock solid.

Are you using a receiver with your TiVOs? Or just your TV's speakers? In any case, you should try outputting your TiVo's sound via both RCA and Toslink to see if the problem is w/ HDMI only? With the latter, the sound should be exactly the same as via HDMI (e.g., Dolby Digital 5.1, etc).

This happens with reciever and also with TV's speakers. I use TV's passthru to feed reciever. I did not one interesting thing this evening. If I am watching live TV (we never do), and I bring up guide and scroll thru channels, with every press of key the sound breaks up.

So, its not the network or PC performance. It's something to do with my THD or my HDMI connection. I will try to connect my THD using other cables and see if that helps any.

I have a 2008 Panasonic 50" - a very nice TV, with a fairly useless passthrough. Its Toslink only ouputs via DD 2.0. Your TV's audio processing may be the cause of your problem. In any case, you are likely better off using Toslink from your TiVo to your receiver, assuming your receiver does not have HDMI.

Thanks for your quick reply. I believe my TV does have a 5.1 pass thru (Toshiba 65HM167) .

But as far as this problem is concerned the audio reciever is not in the picture. It's the same issue even with the reciever turned off, and using TV speakers. I will try to hook up using other cables and see if I still get the same results.

I hooked up my Tivo to TV using component cables and this issue goes away. The sound is not breaking up anymore.

Not sure what can I do about this. It could be a Tivo problem or a problem with HDMI cable. Any pointers, anyone?

EDIT : I also swapped out the HDMI cable and still got the same result.

After I hooked up THD using HDMI cable this issue was back. I realized that I had Tivo sound effects on all this time.

So I changed settings and turned off the Tivo sound effects and this problem goes away (even on HDMI). So I guess what happens is that Tivo sound effects are over riding music (on HDMI) and music is choppy when browsing folder at the same time. When using composite or component cables the music takes priority over sound effects and there is no problem.

Can anyone else test and confirm this?

Instead of disabling sound effects, you could try Settings, Audio, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital to PCM. I had to do that for HDMI.

Thanks, but that did not help. :(
