I am very sad to say I have finally left the TIVO family. I have a new HD TV and as bad as it sounds, I just can't bring myself to buy another box from TIVO. When I called to cancel, she said that I was a continuois subscriber since 2001. I'm the kind of guy who would rather pay per month than just get a lifetime. I realize it's a LOT more expensive in the end, but that's just how I am.

Now to my point...

I've called to cancel one TIVO before and they dropped my monthly price just so they could keep the units active. I was about half expecting them to "give" me a HD box for free for me to keep service with them, but they didn't. She even asked me if there was anything they could do to keep me, and I said yea, if the box was free I'd keep service going on the new one and a couple of the others as well, (I have 3).

I'm going to give the cable company DVR a shot to see if I can get by with that. I think I'll be fine since I really haven't been using the others since I got HD.

So, I'm very sad to say goodbye today....

You can't offer to sell or buy anything in this Site - it is prohibited. You will be the one losing out. You'd best hang onto any TiVo machines you own for you'll be back probably sooner than you realize. Nothing is better than TiVo service - nothing.

Forgot to mention, if anyone wants to buy my units listed below, let me know.

well I have used TiVo DVRs fro quite some time as well. So I would expect you would give me the boxes you point to for free.

Sorry, didn't realize I couldn't offer to sell them, my mistake.

Zeo, am I missing your point?

You'd rather pay more in the 'long run' because that's 'how you are' AND you'll think the cable DVR will 'be fine'.

Okay then....

I got it, got a smile out of me.

Curious, why do you think TiVo should give you a THD for free?

just razzing you some for seeing if Tivo would give you the box for free. Some on the forum have had discussion on people feeling loyal and wanting a company to do better by them.

Some on the forum have at some point defined "loyal customer" somewhat differently from the company's perspective as a customer willing to continue to give them money in exchange for value received - versus - will stay if I do not have to pay any extra money for more value.

no biggie and no flame meant - just a razz.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think they should. They don't owe me anything. I was just expecting, (or maybe hoping), them to offer since they usually throw you a deal if you try to cancel. They cut my sub price in half a few years ago costing them way more than a HD box.

I see. Honestly, I had been with them so long I felt bad for leaving. It was like I just shot my dog.

You'll feel worse when you start using the cable company's DVR.

I just hope you won't have to pay more for the TiVo service when you decide to come back since you probably had pricing that has since been changed.

good point. It sounds like the OP has two 6.95 monthly payments at least. if he cancels them and then after while decides he would rather have TiVo again then those 6.95 rates are long gone.

My first thought when seeing these types of threads is the old saying about not burning bridges. One should try the new service out first, and then cancel Tivo if the new services truely is acceptable/better/cheaper/whatever. This is especially true if you have some special deal/pricing you can't get back if you cancel service.

I just imagine she asked you if there was anything they could do to keep you as she was looking over your file, and by the time you answered she saw you already had a special deal. I can't blame them for not trying to entice you further. Next time you'd probably ask them to pay you. :D

I did have a special deal of 6.95 per TIVO for 3 units.

I haven't watched a show my TIVO's recorded all year. They were still set up to record, but I usually just watched my programs in real time HD. I've never used all the special features the series 2's had. If I want movie tickets, I just go to the theater , lol.

Doesn't sound like you need a DVR at all since you watch everything live.

I have heard reports of customers being offered a reduced purchase price for a TiVoHD when calling to cancel, but not free.

yeah, they are probably happy to have him go if he was getting the retention rate. cost him a lot more in the long run to return than the cost of the new box.

Perhaps there's modest surprise she didn't respond "well, not free, but for $150 . . . " But perhaps their retention algorithm said "cut him loose".

Wow, you've got 3 subs at 6.95/month? I'm not sure of the legality of it all, but you might want to consider letting someone "take over" your account. I gotta think that quite a few people would jump at the opportunity to have 3 subscriptions at only 6.95/month each.

Anyway, if you were to get a Tivo HD (or two or three), did you realise that you could transfer the service on your existing units onto the new unit(s)? I'm guessing the retention folks would probably offer to sell you a new Tivo HD for around $150-$200. Now, if you were to go with the cableco's DVR, I'm guessing that'll run you somewhere around $15-$20/month, or around $10/month more than your Tivo subscription. So you could make up that $150-$200 you had to spend on the Tivo HD in less than 2 years.

As some have already mentioned, you should probably keep your 3 Tivo subs active for at least another month or two while you take the cableco DVR out for a spin, because there's a good chance you'll want to come back to Tivo, and if you cancel your current subs, you won't be able to get the $6.95 price back.

My brother has the cable DVR. the new one (3400 IIRC) runs much cooler than the old 6400 series.

One thing that irks me about his DVR...You can go into the menu and remove all the channels you don't receive.

Thing is, it will skip those channels when using the up/down buttons, but they remain in the guide and have been told there is no way to setup guide for only Channels I Receive.

For that reason alone, I'm glad I have a TiVo (or 2)

As suggested, get the cable dvr, see how it is for a month or so. If you like it, then cancel the TiVo.

P.S.

I like watching live TV as well, but often switch back and forth between 2 channels (pausing the live buffers). IIRC, the cable DVR can't do this.

That depends a great deal on what model of DVR his cable company provides.

Yeah, TiVo is just too damn slick for its own good!

Just need a leaky ol' DVR with a bailing can and paddle to get to the theater at my leisure. :D

R U sure? I had a Moto DVR of the types (forget which exact model) you mention for some time before realizing how to access both live buffers.

I'll have to check next time I'm over his house. It uses Passport Echo, so will have to see.

Bet that's the difference. Mine used i-Guide which provides the same GUI as Comcast's non DVR STB.
