View Full Version : Best way to record entire Team season?

I want to be able to record every NY Ranger game this season. I don't want to keep more than 1, but I don't want the "recap" shows either. I also want it to be smart enough to grab the "Vs." HD or NBC HD broadcasts when applicable.
Whats the best way to do this? Keyword, season pass, something else?
(Note: I did search, but since a similar question was answered over 2 years ago, I thought there might be newer, better ways to do this)

check out the new wishlist functions with multiple keywords and ability to use NOT and so forth.

I'm not entirely certain but to handle the HD as a priority you might need to do 2 wishlists one with the HD category and then prioritize that one above the other in your Season Pass Manager.
At least for Football you add the keyword "at" to your search to get just the games and not all the other non-game stuff.
So you may want 2 wishlists set up like:
HD category + Sports --> Hockey + "New York" + "Rangers" + "at"
Sports --> Hockey + "New York" + "Rangers" + "at"

DancnDude - As a newbie I'm intigued by your and other's knowledge of wishlist 'grammar'. I've looked a bit and can't find a guide to how to do all the tricks (like the "at") - all I can find is this: http://www.tivo.com/mytivo/howto/getthemostoutoftv/howto_create_wishlist_search.html. Is there a better guide out there?

Are you asking him what all the possible operands are? I'd like to use those more than the "at" which isn't much of a trick. I think he's just assuming that if there's an "at", it will pertain to a game and not "Pregame show".
Maybe I can also say "-rewind" (Which is the postgame rangers rewind that airs overnight).
How would I formulate that?

Yeah there is now a way to exclude keywords so you should be able to exclude shows with the word "rewind".

I've mostly just seen suggestions around these boards over time. The new wishlist engine does a lot more than it used to. The key really is to look at the guide data and use the consistencies (or inconsistencies) to either include or exclude keywords.
The "at" trick works since it appears in every game description (ie. Green Bay Packers at Minnesota Vikings) but usually not in the analysis shows.

the link to the How to in this thread has the answer
Use either THUMBS buttons on your remote control to get even better results:
Press SELECT to edit a term, then press a THUMB button once to exclude it from your search (adds a minus sign). Press again to make the term optional in your search (puts it in parenthesis). Press three times to remove the modifiers and make the term required for your search. For example, your WishList search might include:
Title Keyword: –ER
Actor: George Clooney
This search will find all appearances of George Clooney except for those in the series ER.
And like DncnDude I use the 'at" keyword to get just the Football games as well. I would assume Hockey to be pretty similar

Thanks all to the replies to my somewhat hijacking question. I did of course see the tips on the help page I referenced, but I can't say I've studied the WishList screen in any detail (just a quick visit so far to enter 'Jonas Brothers' for my daughter, truth be told!). It was mostly the reference to "at" that had me scratching my head - I didn't 'get' it and didn't see it referenced in the help page. Thanks for the clarification.

Unfortunately two wishlists are needed in most sports wishlists (one regular and one for HD). You have to give the HD version higher priority to get it to record the HD version if there are two versions in the guide. The problem is if there are more than one instance of a sporting event it picks the lower channel. Since HD channels tend to be the higher channel number than the SD versions, you will get the SD program without 2 wishlists. I'm baffled as to why Comcast gets the "prefer HD" feature of wishlists but standalone TiVos don't get this feature.

OK I wasn't going to ask this but I guess that's the point of these forums... What is the best way (or only way?) to request a 'HD' version of a wishlist. By reading here I got the impression that there would be a 'HD' checkbox or some such on the Wishlist screen - in checking this morning I didn't see any such thing. Is this just another operand you manually add like '+HD' to the keyword, like GEORGE CLOONEY +HD in the general (or perhaps even actor level) wishlist? I guess this would rely on the description of the high def show having the HD in the description, right?

I would imagine you could use the HD category. For example, when I search for movies, I choose HD as first category and then movies, and then I search.

Yep, it's this. Use the HD category.

My wishlist is a simple uncategorized "NHL Hockey" * "Red Wings"; that has been catching all of the games for me for the past several years and I don't get any other shows from it.
I don't know about the HD thing -- it looks like you have received a lot of good advice on that. We do not get multiple channels for any one game -- unless it changes this year -- so HD vs. non-HD is not an issue for me.

I forget the categories right off hand but you might alos be using a category that limits to sporting events and thus filters out the pre and post game team shows.
I use a NOT keyword in the wishlist since I can take it out if something is up with the team and i want to see the team shows. ;)
