Just caught a couple of episodes of "It's Me or the Dog!" on Animal Planet.
Kinda like the super nanny shows, only for dog training.
The first family had six kids and five dogs. The most recent dog they got was a terrier.
They were walking him three times a week, because he was going ballistic whenever they met other dogs out on a walk.
Imagine what a terrier is like when he doesn't have anything to do and is not getting enough attention and exercise!
Fortunately the family got on board quickly -- and the training got rid of the bad behavior caused by lack of exercise, and the aggression issues that may have been a byproduct of some past abuse.
The second episode showed a woman with a Pomeranian and a Peke as her lap dogs. The Pom had taken over the house and the woman who owned him wasn't doing anything to stop it. He was nipping at people, and trying to keep the owner's husband from getting into bed at night!
Victoria Stilwell, the trainer featured on the show, has the patience of a saint. She showed this ditz woman a picture board of the family, with the crazy Pom at the top, the owner second, and the husband, the two kids, and the other dog at the bottom. She explained that this was her dog's world view, that it was the Pomeranian's house, and all of them were very lucky to live in it.
"Now how do you think things got this way?"
The husband and the two kids immediately turned to look at the mom. And the mom didn't get it!
Victoria laid down the law about how things would have to be and the mom said (of the dogs) "Does this mean that they won't be my babies anymore?"
It's a good thing I wasn't able to reach through the TV at that point, or there might have been murder done. I would have cheerfully strangled that woman with my bare hands.
It was horrible to see her dogs snapping and biting at the house guests (the few that were still brave enough to come by) and see her cooing and petting them, encouraging their bad behavior. Her 'babies', indeed!
Now, what do you want to bet that the good dog owners will watch this show, and the ones who need to see it the most will never watch it? :D
