View Full Version : FIOS update leads to TiVo Guide problem

Just for reference for anyone who might run into this themselves:
The Good: FIOS released an update with a New Channel Line-up with more HD channels!
The Bad: TiVo not updating the line-up and Guide info to my TiVo HD units.
After spending an hour determining that the problem was only the TiVos (and btw, Verizon, could you update the website with the new lineup?), I contacted TiVo tech support and after various checks , we ended up changing my zip code from 19355 to 19350, which added another option to my Channel Lineup choices in Guided Setup.
Previously, I had only gotten FIOS Philadelphia, now I also got the option for FIOS Delaware/PA. That appeared to have all the channels mapped correctly. Of course, I then had to change all the channels that I wanted to appear through channel setup. I'm not sure the line-up is 100% correct or not, though. Some of the channels, particularly the net affiliates, were registering with no program info on the TiVo, even after a connection update (which might mean that a couple of channels are different). I [i]think a few of the channels might be different between my new lineup and the one that I got when I changed my zip code. (I believe channel 511 is supposed to be 503, which may be why the guide has no data for it).
Just thought I'd share my experience so far in case anyone else ran into it. If the problem continues, then I'll need to speak to TiVo about their lineup information.

You can also use a south Jersey zip (I used 08055) which is a closer match than the DE guide.

FiOS tech was here today (re-authorizing cable cards in Series 3 - didn't take first time), and said that YESTERDAY Verizon changed a huge number of channels so they could add a number of new High Def channels, and while the our Verizon DVR quickly reflected these changes, the TiVO Guide used in our Series 3 still doesn't have any of the new info.
Consequently, the only way to record a program is to select channel and time, and of course TiVO gives it a totally wrong name (or doesn't have any info if the channel wasn't in use before).
Very frustrating. Does anyone know how long it takes for these changes to be reflected? I've connected to TiVO over the network and nothing new is being downloaded.
I submitted a notification in the Contact Support area, but no reply yet.

Got the same problem here in Redondo Beach (90277). I figured something got corrupted and reset the guide data only to have it still be messed up. Who do I call to see if there is an alternate ZIP code?

Me too, damn this is annoying. I'm in Venice, CA - 90291 - and since Thursday (I think), my Tivo has become demented. Most channels are insanely wrong - the Guide shows 74 is FSC, but you switch to it and it's MSNBC, etc. I've got channels I can't get to - 1009 example, which sets the Tivo into a mad loop if you try to go to it. I tried redoing the channel lineup but am only offered FIOS Pomona as an option, and everything comes up wrong again anyway.
Annoying as all hell, and I don't know exactly who to call - Tivo or Verizon?

It appears Verizon's online channel lineup may be the closest to the correct lineup. The problem lies simply with the fact that Verizon has been rolling out new lineups since 9/11. Notify TIVO to sync-up the new channels. I contacted TIVO and notified them of the Delaware County (19373) mess.
I will give the Delaware state lineup a try. There is nothing more annoying than trying to find a cartoon for the little monster and winding up with Country Music y'all!

Update:- Seems like this was fixed last night some time. I forced a connection to Tivo last night and this morning's recordings are all good and the guide info seems to be back where it was. Hopefully the fix is in.

Yes, left one tivo on phila fios and one on south jersey.. the Philly once seems ok now... Going to change the other back...
Seems like a lot of the new HD channels are blank, QVCHD for example.. don;t know if these channels are currently placeholders for when the channels come online.

Really? I'll have to try changing it tonight on one of them. I tried calling TiVo on Saturday, but gave up after 20 minutes on hold, resolving to deal with it tonight. This would be great if fixed, because then all my Season Passes will be OK. Not to mention the Guide Info.

In all markets where FioS updates their channels, it has been taking about 2-4 business days for the changes to be reflected in the Tivo guide... with New Jersey being the exception at greater than a week. The issue is in how Verizon notifies Tribune Media Service of the updates, and how those updates are prepared and sent to tivo.

FYI - the Verizon website has the updated channel listings for every region beong affected. There's a link that takes you to the new channel lineups for each area serviced by FIOS and the date each one takes effect. My update is supposed to happen tomorrow with the new lineup in effect on 9/18/09.
Here's the link to the channel lineup page:
http://www22.verizon.com/content/fiostv/channel+lineup/channel+lineup.htm
Look at the lower right-hand corner of the webpage and you'll see links for updated listings and the dates they become active. Since not all areas are listed I am assuming that once they make the switch in any given area the regular channel listing is superceded by the new one and the delta lineup goes away. The current list only shows areas changing 9/18 and later. However, if you click on the link for your area, the channel list has an effective date to indicate when it became official.

Yeah, I visited that page the day of the switch and two days after. The Southeastern PA link still pointed to the old lineup until yesterday, in fact, and is dated 09/15. I suppose that explains why TiVo didn't update until Sunday night (or in my case, last night).
I'm just glad it's fixed. :)

Yeah, this is freaking fabulous. They pull this channel line-up change in Northern Virginia, on the morning of the first week of new programming. So, now I have to wait possibly 4 days for TiVo to update their programming, possibly missing a handful of season premiers and also having to redo all my season passes etc. They are freaking brilliant...... So much for National stay at home week. UGHGHGHHGHHHGHHGHHGHGHGHGH
I'm certainly all for more HD channels, but didn't it occur to Fios that a couple of weeks ago might have been a much better time to do this? Really quite amazing . . . reminds me a bit of the disaster Hershey created in 1999 when they decided to implement SAP, in August, just before the Halloween to Christmas season -- 8 weeks in which they sell most of the candy they'll sell all year. http://www.cio.com/article/31518/Supply_Chain_Hershey_s_Bittersweet_Lesson (Hershey's Bittersweet Lesson)
So has anyone found a good channel substitute for Northern Virginia Fios? Would love a zip code. The ones I've tried above are not similar to the mailer Fios sent me, which has:
NBC: 504
FOX: 505
ABC: 507
CBS: 509
On a related note, I find it disappointing that Tivo doesn't offer a manual override for the user. If I know NBC is 504, why can't I just map it myself?

when they did the update here in central Mass.. (aug 22 i think...) it took about 5 days until it updated...of course i was forcing a connection every few hours and it did it while i was at work. It is because Tivo works off the tribune tv data and until verizon updates that your guide will not update...

I found info on another board that said for Northern Virginia you can use Columbia, MD zip code 21044. Choose FIOS Washington Metro when it gives you choice of provider.
I'm in the middle of setting that up now.....I'll post back if it doesn't work.

I am in the middle of set up too for Northern VA but when I used the columbia MD 21044 and selected Wash Metro, it still didnt map. So I went back and did 21044 and selected Ann Arundel and the Premiums mapped exactly... So continuing with setup and hoping for same result with broadcast channels. will let you know.

It does no good to select Washington Metro. That's the same outdated lineup that we already had. Howard/Anne Arundel switched last week, so they've already gone through this nonsense, and have a current lineup that almost matches ours.

yeah, thank god the did mine BEFORE all the new shows premiered...for us all the 500's are the HD local channels...NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX and all the 0-99 are the standard defs...So NBC is 7 and HD NBC is 507...so that might be how yours is for manual record...the 500's of the locals = the HD

That's how it is for the majority of channels and how it was listed in August for the Philadelphia listings...until Verizon decided to screw it all up and move channel 3 to 511 and channel 6 to 514 for some reason. Argh.
As for NoVa, just after I entered Northern New Jersey I got a phone call from my sister (also in the DC Metro area) that she'd used 20818, Anne Arundel County, and it worked perfectly. So I went all the way through Guided Setup in NNJ then redid it for 20818.
So far it appears to be an exact match. But my Tivo probably thinks I'm on the run from the law with all these moves :-)
By the way, the listing of channel lineup PDFs here:
http://www22.verizon.com/Content/FiOSTV/Channel+Lineup/Channel+Lineup.htm
will tell you everything you need to know as to whether something is a good match for you. And yes, the distinction is not between, say, zip codes in the DC area service. You can see from the list of PDFs at the link above that there's a separate service area for Anne Arundel and Howard Counties, and the reason all this matters is that they switched their service a week or two ago and so it's been updated. If (as an example) Richmond, VA switches next week and doesn't have updated Tribune data, then someone there might tell TiVo they're in NoVa to get the right programming data. But just moving around to other zip codes in your same service area will have you downloading the same bad channel lineup data.
Thanks for all the help everyone!!

I called and was told to use 10001 New York Plus. The station call letters are wrong, but the channels are correct. All my season passes seem to be working. I'm sure there's a few local stations I'm missing but I can live without them for a while until the real guide gets fixed.

Thanks for the tip.
This line-up change came on the same day I got FIOS TV installed. Just one more fun thing to screw up a cable card install ;)
"Why can't I get my HD local channels".
"Must be a cable card problem, we'll schedule a tech to come back out with more cable cards"
<a bit later after some internet fact checking>
"Oh, because my HD locals are in the 5xx range, not the 8xx range. Stupid line-up change"
"Verizon, I'd like to cancel that tech visit, this seems to be working now"

We got the lineup change here in Howard Co. MD, last week and it took about two days before the guide got straightened out. I just printed out the updated lineup from the FIOS website and then checked my To Do list for upcoming recordings. The channels were there but the correct data wasn't showing up in the guide yet so I just set up manual recordings on the new channels for the few shows that were scheduled to take place.
I kept forcing calls to Tivo until the units finally received the channel lineup changes. Overall, I think I only ended up recording two shows manually since the change occurred during the middle of the week when there was a lull in my recording schedule so it was of little impact on me. Everything is fine now and all of the channels have remapped to their new locations. In fact, I just finished watching the latest episode of Stargate Atlantis in Hi-Def from the Sci-Fi Channel and it looked great!

SUCK!
Verizon moved the time table up 2 days for the roll out of the North Texas new channel line up and it would appear that we are the ONLY central time zone FiOS market.
Anyone have suggestions for how to modify season passes to now miss out on everything?
mappler
10-06-2008, 08:11 AM
If you can find another zip-code with the same channel lineup, switch to that. If not, I'd start creating some manual recordings for the next few days. It only took a couple of days for Tivo to catch-up, so the problem was very short lived here.
memn0ch
10-06-2008, 12:00 PM
Without there being any other markets in the central time zone, it doesn't matter if I found a similar channel line up or not. It would still be recording the wrong time on the right channels, with the exception of the local channels which would be completely off and that is where most of the shows will be recorded over the next few days.
The solution that I came up with was to not record in HD for the next 2 days, since those are where most of the problems lie currently. Hopefully, this will be updated quickly.

Will calling Tivo do any good on this or do we just have to wait it out? Verizon heavily promoted this so Tivo just was lazy to not change it for North Texas.

Verizon rolled this out early though. This was scheduled for the 8th then all of a sudden they release it this morning and update the website to indicate the 6th. Wouldn't exactly say that was advanced notice considering that as of last week it still said the 8th.

now
Go to Messages & Settings / Settings / Channel List.
You'll need to bring up your channel list and there will be an option to hit "Enter" (botton of the remote) if the channel list is wrong. You'll need to hit thumbs down three times to restart the channel portion of the Tivo setup.
On the screen labeled "Cable Channel Lineup", at the bottom of the screen there will be a black box that says to hit "Enter" if your lineup is incorrect. At that point, I was able to select "Keller Fios Rebuild Extended" or something like that. I compared the channel list to what I printed from Verizon's web site this morning and they matched.
After restarting the channel portion for the setup in the quote above from the other thread, you will need to answer "I'm not sure ask me about a different channel" four or five times in a row then you will get to choose which possible cable lineup you have.
The correct option is the 4th option "Fios Keller Rebuild Extended Basic"
You will need to reselect all of the new premium hd channels you receive, then connect, download, and load the data (I have been update for 30 min so far, long way to go before the "loading")
Do us all a favor and go ahead and call verizon support and yell at them, I have. they need to stop this, it is the second or third time they have rolled out the channel change before the date they give Tribune for me.
