I used to be able to transfer from TiVo to my PC. In fact a few weeks ago I got around to deleting a couple of shows that were no longer needed, so I know it used to work.
I tried to use that feature today, but I get a message on Tovo Desktop that claims inability to contact the DVR.
It works in other regards, it still will play music that is on my PC.
In looking everywhere I can think of to find the soiution. Could it be that when Tivo Desktop brought out Plus it took that away from me unless I get Plus.
That wouldn't be very nice.
Any ideas?
Thanks

If you're using an old version of Desktop...
Sounds like the symptoms of the expired Windows certificate.
An upgrade to at least Tivo Desktop 2.6.1 is warrented.

Edit: I now remember that was for transfers from PC to Tivo, the opposite of your problem.
Have you done something recently that would affect your network settings, such as installing network security software?
If that isn't it, try rebooting your entire network (PC, router, Tivo, etc.), if you haven't already.
I don't fool with desktop to transfer from Tivo -> PC. I just browse to https://192.168.1.42 (or whatever the ip for the box is) and download the file back to the pc from there. Simple and fast.
Username: tivo
Password: Media access key #

Thanks to all - I finally got around to seeing what would help and discovered that the version I have (2,5.275381) works. Alll other network related chores have worked well, but apparently some things I had to do to get a wireless printer connected to my network caused Tivo to lose track of my media access number.
But I'm interested in RoyK's method.Maybe I just didn't understand everything, so my try got me nowhere.
Roy, can you tell me , what box, and how do I get the number?
Thanks again.

You doesn't have to call me Roy
1) Make a note of your MAK (Media Access Key)
2) Find the IP address of your TiVo - Messages & Settings - Settings - Phone & Network
3) Hit https://YourTivoIPAddress with your web browser
4) Ignore the certificate error
5) User name = "tivo" - password = YourMAK
You'll then see your Now Playing list in your browser. Download from there.

tivo has no idea what the problem is
can i have a bad sector on my hard drive? i have spent hours on the phone with them and now im back to square one
and im afraid if they send me a new tivo that im gonna have major issues when i have to re install the cablecard cause i've been pretty good with it with the exception of audio loss for like 10-15 seconds but thats it i have all my channels

Tried this in FireFox 3 with a hardwired Tivo S2, and all I see is the "Congratulations!
You’ve successfully connected your TiVo® box to your home network, blah blah blah" Screen. No login at all - what am I missing?
Scratch that - I need to learn to read thoroughly! :o

But I see you've figured that out.

It's been my experience that if a file won't download completely with Tivo Desktop, other methods won't be any more fruitful.
Do your files that fail have any bad glitches/pixillation?
When I had a failure, that was usually the cause.

i never watched them to see but do you think that's it? some of my programming i get a audio loss for 10-15 seconds but the picture keeps going and then its fine but it used to happen often and it has been getting better
i dont know if its cable, HD, or that channel but i always have 100% signal strength

I can't really say. My problems were in the past with an S2 and analog OTA.
Any signal dropout or glitch would cause the transfer to fail at that point.
I haven't had any problems with my Tivo HD, but most of the shows I transfer are usually clean and occasional pixillation will make it through the transfer process.
But if your cable service is iffy with occasional signal losses, no matter how minor, that could very well be the cause.
And there are other things to consider. For instance, do your transfers always fail at a certain mb / gb?
If yes, that could point to a problem on the computer side such as a firewall limiting the size of a file transfer.
If the failures happen at random mb, make a note of the end time of the file on the computer and try to find that spot in the program on the Tivo to verify whether or not there is some sort of *glitch* there.

thanks for the suggestions. Well yes when they crap out it's usually at the same point of the file size like I can do a movie thats 2 gigs and it will only transfer 200 or so MB and stop at the same amount.
I did remove norton completely with the uninstall tool but I still have windows defender on vista but I disabled the firewall so I stil don't get it.
Now the checking the runtime thing to see when it craps out on the pc and when check if it's bad on the tivo I have to try still.
Thanks for the help and I'll keep updating
