can anyone suggest a cable company or satellite provider's receiver that allows for a serial port connect (to change channels) in place of that IR wire signal?

I will change service to cable or another satellite compnay, but I am keep my TIVO!!!!

Only DirecTV satellite receivers have serial control.
For cable, some DCT2000 cable boxes do (if enabled for the provider), but major providers are not permitted to issue those anymore, but DCH series boxes, which don't apparently support serial.

If you are in Canada, I recommend Starchoice. It works very will with TiVo's IR blasters, at least the older receivers I use do.

Can you recommend which DirectTV receiver? I will order it NOW. I am so tired of my IR Wire deciding when it wants to change channels and when it dont.

It is so frustrating. I spoke with the DirectTV folks and those phone order folks have no idea what I am talking about, serial port.

If you have a model brand I will order it now. Thanks.

Have you tried building an IR tent? That can help isolate your receiver from stray interference. A lot cheaper than changing hardware and programming provider.

I'm in Canada with ExpressVu basic 4100 receiver, the dual TiVo IR blasters work perfectly for me never had a single issue changing channels. I have no tent or anything. 100x better than when I had a media center PC.

Of course, with TiVo now working again with DirecTV to make another High Def DirecTivo receiver, maybe getting one of those is the better move. A shame to shut down an existing TiVo, but if it gets you problem-free channel changing, an all-in-one box might be the way to go.
