"TiVo and RIM are getting all friendly on us, teaming up to build software for the BlackBerry that could strike fear in the hearts of Slingbox and Orb."

"BlackBerry manufacturer RIM and TiVo manufacturer TiVo have teamed up to offer what sounds like SlingBoxesque mobile entertainment on RIM phones."
I know other posters here read these blogs, so I'm sure this is posted somewhere else, but my searches came up with nada...so here it is.
Would anyone get a BB just to stream their tivo content?

No, but my iPhone would make a perfect place to stream Tivo content...

I have my doubts about a slingbox like function. Currently the TiVo hardware has no way to transcode the video into a format that would stream across the internet well.
I can imagine some TiVo->TiVo Desktop->Internet version of streaming. This would have your PC do the heavy lifting of transcoding the video into a streaming format. But this could not be done live. You would not be able to stream a video from the TiVo to your phone. You would first have to send it to the PC and we all know how long that takes.
If I am missing something, please someone poke me.

what about HTC smartphones? i have an At&T tilt with kick @ss solid 3G and would love a streaming solution that did not take the expense of Sling or the lack of current development like ORB

From a security perspective, I can see RIM associating your BB pin with your TiVo account and delivering via the RIM NOC.
Transcoding will be interesting... TiVo->PC->(Fluffy internet cloud) seems a recipe for multiple and simultaneous failures. Something as simple as getting content from Amazon to the TiVo can be bad enough.

I have a BB Pearl and a Tilt. I use the tilt, simply because there are so many apps available. If all you need is messaging and calendar, the BB is much more solid, but I have too many apps I use when I travel that I just can't live without.
I, too, would love to see this on WM devices.

Doesn't the TiVo HD have a chip in it that does downsizing and transcoding? I thought I read that way back when it was first released. If so then that could be used for this application. Although it would leave out all the people with S3/S2 units, which don't have the chip.
