View Full Version : What Wireless Access point to use with a modded TiVo
Just bought an upgraded TiVo from a colleague.
Upgraded as in 120GB hard disk, and internet channel guide.
Unfortunately, I hadn't twigged it has a wireless card in it - and my 3' thick stone walls mean I need to generate a wireless connection off the end of some Cat5 in the living room.
Any suggestions?

The wireless card in the adapter in the TiVo will be an 802.11b (11mbps) Prism II chipset card so it should be compatible with the vast majority of access points that have automatic 11g/11b switching support. Be aware though that it may degrade the performance of your wireless LAN somewhat...
An alternative would be to buy a Cachecard (especially if you're thinking of upgrading to a bigger drive) or a Turbonet/Terbonet card as these are wired and will plug directly into your router without the hassles of wireless.

Also bear in mind the the tivo wireless card only supports WEP (string of 13/26 hex characters),
not the newer/better/more secure WPA (any keyphrase).
If you don't actually want the web functionality and have a handy phone point you could simply switch back to dial up and flog the Airnet on eBay...
Alternatively I've always found Buffalo wireless kit cheap and reliable.
