View Full Version : Press GUIDE, Tivo Reboots!

I have a Series 2 that has an upgraded HD from Weaknees. It's worked well for the last year since the upgrade. Two weeks ago it stopped recording season passes because it said "the program was no longer in the guide" (or some such). I reset and did the move last SP up to first position, then back down again (to force the Tivo to reload guide or program information). That worked.

But this morning we awoke to find that our Tivo reboots any time we hit the guide button. It updates, it records programs, it lets me delete programs. It fast forwards, shows program info when we hit the info button. But press Guide and it's "System Restarting".

I ran Kickstart 57 and when it came back up, same thing! I was really hoping that would fix it! Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Maybe try repeating Guided Setup? That would clear out ALL Guide data and re-download everything.

Thanks for the suggestion! Was hopeful, since it was seemingly the one thing I haven't tried that wasn't overly-invasive. But it didn't work. Still reset when I hit guide. Sigh...

This is probably not what's happening to you, but on the off-chance....

For a while, I had KidZone set up on my Tivo with a password starting with the digit 0. Occasionally, I'd press the Tivo button and then start typing the password, but I'd do it too quickly and the Tivo would recognize the "Tivo+0" code, which triggers the starting animation. (Not an actual restart, just the Welcome to Tivo animation stuff). It took a while before I realized what was going on. Before I did, I was convinced that pressing the Tivo button was sporadically causing my Tivo to restart.

EDITED to add: Just realized you said "guide" button, not "tivo" button. Ah well. I'll leave my post up in case it helps someone else in the future.

Hi, thanks for the post. I wish it were that easy. It's got me stumped. I'm going to get some of the programming off of there that my son has (Spongebob and about a thousand other kids shows) and go through the emergency reinstall I think. Wondering if a call to Tivo would actually help, since this is a 200 hour Weaknees upgraded hard drive. I can't imagine it's bad, but you never know!

You said you tried a kickstart 57 ... how about a 54? From there you can run the various S.M.A.R.T. hard drive tests.

Why don't you contact Weakness and ask them?

Why don't you contact Weakness and ask them?

I'd go this route. I've had a couple of problems that I emailed them about thinking it was a problem with the hard drive and they were able to troubleshoot the problems via email.

54 is new to me! I think I need to search for a post listing the kickstarts. I only knew of 57,58 and 52. :) Will try it. Also posted a thread over at Weaknees. Thanks for the suggestions - I appreciate your help!

Here's the list:

It's in an S3 thread, but most of those are valid for the S2 platform.

Thanks WK replied likely HD problem and I should buy another. Sigh. 1 year 6 months on since install. Disappointing! But I think it's still under warranty. WK website points to a doc that says man. warr. is 5 years...

UPDATE: Just ran the 54 and the drive passes the first SMART test. Weird, I expected it to fail. I'll run the drive tests and see what it turns up. Thanks again for the advice.

Nothing worked. Weaknees told me to buy a new hard drive. Out of desperation, before ordering a new drive I tried every kickstart there is - and 51 worked. Software Upgrade. The guide now comes up. I'm wondering if an upgrade didn't complete in the past perhaps? Dunno. But the family are all dancing with joy at the site of the guide here! Thanks all for your help.

I don't know how this kickstart works, but if it forces the use of the alternate partition for the OS, it might point to a problem with the partition it was using before the kickstart.

I would plan now to get a new HD before the next software update.
