View Full Version : Unable to view Tivo menus on one unit

I have two Tivos and two cable boxes connected to the same TV. Both are series 2, one is made by Tivo and the other is a Toshiba with DVD.

Both are connected the same with 75 Ohm, from cable in to my cable box, then out to the Tivo in, and back out to my Sony Wega HDTV. There are also direct RGB connections from the HD cable boxes to the TV. I can select two views from each with or without the Tivo included.

There are differences. When the Tivo unit is on standby the signal still passes through it to the TV. When the Toshiba unit is on standby, the signal does not pass through and the TV screen is blank.

Yesterday the TV Lamp blew and while I wait for a new one, I have another basic 75 ohm only TV connected via an AB switch with the same Cable to Tivo to TV setup. Now the puzzle.

If the AB is set to the Tivo unit, all is well, I can view the Cable menus and the Tivo menus. When the AB is set to the Toshiba unit, I can see the cable menus but not the Tivo menus and I don't hear the Tivo sounds.

I really can't even tell whether the unit is on Standby or not, but checking the now playing list through the other unit shows it did record shows last night. I have checked the connections several times and all appears to be right, but it is as if the Toshiba unit doesn't exist.

I also know from past use that if I am viewing via either Tivo connection and I use the Cable menus there is a slight but very noticeable delay after clicking on a menu item. Right now that delay exists on the Tivo unit but not on the Toshiba Unit, another sign it is being bypassed somehow.

Can anyone suggest a reason for this?

Simply, the DVD unit does not have an RF modulator, its RF out is always a bypass. You need a separate RF modulator to connect it to an RF in, or connect it to the A/V in on the set (if it has one).

Thank you very much, you answered more questions than I asked. The new lamp was delivered today, so I am good to go with the Wega TV, but I just bought an RF modulator on eBay anyway. That will resolve what I mentioned about the screen being blank when the Tivo is on standby.

Wasn't trying to get it noticed, just trying to keep it from being noticed and passed over. Shortly after posting, I saw there were several actual puzzles, logic puzzles and others here that would be automatically passed over by non-puzzlers.

If this site allowed me to change the subject line or even just delete a note I posted, there would have been no tragic 'problem' in the first place would there? Speaking of 'problems', I doubt there actually was one for the unretentive among us.

I have the Modulator connected, but still no go. I think I have the A/V connected wrong. I have the 75 Ohm going from cable box to Tivo to modulator to TV but still no A/V with Tivo turned off. Where should the modulator A/V cables be connected to?
