Having only just ordered my Tivo yesterday, I was wondering if anything is copy protected on Cox in Phoenix?

If you ordered a TiVo HD or TiVo HD XL, then you will find that many channels on the Cox AZ network have the shows copy protected, which means you can't copy them to another TiVo or to a PC.
Taking a look at the programs on my TiVo HD w/ TiVo Desktop, the programs on the following channels are not copy protected:
13 KAZT
41 HGTV
51 Comedy Central
52 E!
60 Bravo
62 TLC
139 Encore WAM
703 KTVK - 3 HD
705 KPHO - CBS HD
706 KASW - CW HD
710 KSAZ - FOX HD
712 KPNX - NBC HD
715 KNXV - ABC HD
On the other hand, all of the programs on the following channels are copy protected:
50 Sci-Fi
104 Investigation Discovery
720 Science Channel HD
723 Discovery Channel HD
740 A&E HD
757 Animal Planet HD
762 History HD
I can't speak for any of the other channels at this time since I don't have any current recordings on any channels other than those listed above. Others on this forum that live in the Phoenix area may be able to chime in with data for some of the other channels.
Now that the Cox AZ cable card firmware fiasco has finally been resolved, perhaps it's time to address the copy protection issues with Cox...

I have 2) S3 and 2) S2 TiVos. Everything SD can be transfered. Only local channels available off air recorded in HD can be transfered. All other HD channels, in my experience, are copy protected and can't be transfered or copied. It's a little ridiculous since I record anything I can in HD when possible, which defeats the whole multi room viewing capability. Count me in if there's something we can do to get the flagging corrected in the Phoenix market.

Anybody notice that virtually everything is now copy protected except locals? I used to only copy to my computer sparingly. So, I didn't pay that close attention to the copy protection. But, I just got a 2nd Tivo, primarily because of multi-room viewing, and noticed that there was more copy protection than I thought. So, I just checked on my computer ... and indeed, it has changed.
For instance, Comedy Central (51) is now protected. I looked on my computer and new recordings show as protected, but I have old Comedy Central recordings on my computer. So, this is definitely a change.
Did anybody ever have any luck with intelligent conversation with Cox?

I called Cox this morning and spoke to two different 1st line reps that told me that the channel provider dictates if it is copy protected or not and that they are required by the FCC to abide by that.
After researching this forum, it appears that this explanation is a bunch of hooey and I'm suspecting that the provider probably set the CCI value to 0x02 by default and that Cox has the ability to change it to 0x00. In fact, users on other forum posts for Verizon, Cox Tulsa, and Cox Orange County have stated that they can copy anything on non-premium channels such as HBO, Showtime, etc. That kind of setting would be understandable and fine.
I explained to the rep that there were many people writing letters to Cox executives and the FCC about this and that I was just trying to have a conversation with somebody at Cox that is very knowledgeable about the copy protection so that I could be sure the settings were a deliberate decision on the part of Cox and not just that they aren't doing anything with it and the 0x02 values are just there as default, and not required values.
He told me that he would check with the software techs at Cox to try to get a real answer and that he would call me back. I think that's pretty nice of him if he really does it, but I'm still not sure it will get us anywhere.
I want to wait ..... but if I get nowhere with that, I'd like to gauge interest in an organized letter writing campaign that is well timed so that all messages are sent on the same day. I'm guessing that the subset of Tivo HD/S3 users that are would like this policy changes is small. So, the timing would get us noticed. Please reply if you are interested in this.
Thanks!

I started a thread over on DSLReports.com. The Cox forum there has Cox techs checking in, so I'll see what they say.

Can anyone else confirm Cox Phoenix dropped Copy Protection today.
Since this afternoon I am seeing most all channels except Premiums as Copy Freely - CCI Byte: 0x00
All because one person asked to have it removed @ DSLR Forums:

Just noticed this morning and confirmed by recording and then transferring shows to my iMac from Comedy Central HD, MSNBCHD, ESPNHD, FoxSportsHD,BravoHD, TLC HD, Boomerang, Cartoon Network HD... i tried a variety of shows/network types, and all worked fine. (I believe HBO is still copyright-protected, but i would expect premiums to be.)
Nice!

Don't know if it is related, but at 5:55am my CableCARDs downloaded an update and rebooted, now the TA is offline, and haven't been able to get it back.
TA back up now, all good.

My Thanks also; Cox in Tucson shares much with Phoenix distribution including the copy protection on everything except locals; As of 11/2, it's gone. I can look at my folder of Daily Shows on 1046 and see the red circle on 11/1 but transferable on 11/2.
Now I can see about retiring an old series 2.

You might want to "retire" it, but I wouldn't get rid of it altogether.
This whole copy protection business strikes me as (mostly) delusions of power wielded by tin-pot dictators at the cable companies. They block copying because they can, not because it's a rational thing to do. Just one of the many things that cable companies do that make them universally loathed, despised, and reviled.
So when something happens to the current, enlightened, "decision maker" at Cox, his replacement might turn copy protection back on. Just for spite.
I'm bitter because Verizon sold us out to Frontier, who turned on copy protection for no good reason.

Any one know if this is true for Tucson ...
my series 4 and series 3 both say CCI Byte: 0x00
how ever I still have stuff that i cant transfer (mainly HD stuff) or use multi room view.
does one have to check for each channel ?

Same for me. All channels that I watch that used to be copy protected are no longer copy protected as of 11/2 (I'm in Chandler). Thanks from me as well.

Yep, I spoke too soon; I see copy protection on some channels now, but not on others.
MLB Network has it; So does MSNBC.

So rather than whine about it, why don't those of you who are impacted do something about it? I suggest you visit the "other" TiVo forum and look into an alternate solution. Of course, that is, unless you have a Premier. In that case, you're screwed.

1. Not whining, just commenting.
2. Not familiar with "other" TiVo forum or alternate solutions.
3. I have two Premieres and a Premiere Elite. So i guess i'm screwed.

At a minimum, alternate solutions require physically modifying your TiVo. Either you have to be really good at soldering, or have to pay someone to do it for you.
I wonder if this was related to EAS test.

I also noted this on another thread, but just in case...
I posted on Cox Arizona's FB page, asking why copyright protection was turned back on. Here is the response i was given:
Good morning Jon, I wanted to let you know that we had some maintenance to our system being done and now that it has been completed, all channels have returned to their proper settings. I do apologize for any inconvenience. Please let me know if there is anything else you need. Thank you.
