I have 2 HR10-250's, one appears to have a dead hard drive.
Can I take the drive out of the good one, clone it and put the clone in the bad box and have it work ok? (after deleting, resetting everything when I put it in the box)?
And the real question, can I use something off the ultimate boot CD to clone it, or do I have to use "tivo specific" tools?
Thanks,
Brian

Yes, you can do this. I don't know what "ultimate boot CD" is, but I recommend MFSlive (http://www.mfslive.org/)for this purpose.
When you boot with the copied drive, you'll need to do a Clear and Delete Everything, otherwise you'll get Error #51. (According to MFSlive, if you use WinMFS and "mfscopy", you can skip this step, though of course no recordings are copied.)

Thanks Steve...
So poking around the closet I discovered that the largest IDE drive I have is 200G, so I'm guessing that mfslive (or any cloning program for that matter) won't copy the 250G drive to the 200G drive - is that correct?

Your replacement drive must be AT LEAST the same capacity as the original drive. It cannot be smaller.

And a caveat to what litzdog911 said, even if the drive states it's the same size, if it's not the same model it could be off by a small amount and it won't work either if you are copying from another TiVo. It is no problem with this method if it's larger.
I would suggest just downloading the software, if you dig you can find it free, or you can simply buy it too, then you won't have any problems.

Your replacement drive must be AT LEAST the same capacity as the original drive. It cannot be smaller.I hesitated long and hard because of who posted this, but I do believe that I have restored an image from a 300 gb drive to a 250 gb drive. You need to research what the various switches in the tools do, but I do think it's possible. Now if you want to copy recordings from the first drive to the second -- that's another questions.

Instantcake will work on it, even though it is smaller than the original drive.

Yes, If you do a FRESH install. However, if you want to COPY the drive it must be exactly the same size or bigger, if it's just a few bytes smaller it won't work.

You can certainly create an image with mfs backup and restore to another drive of a different size. The OP doesn't want to copy the recodings on his working box, he just wants to get the second one working without paying someont $20 for an image. The answer is yes, it can be done. The OP needs to look at the tivo underground or other forums for how to.
