I left Directv in June of 2007. I moved to an apartment that did not face South. I moved again this past July and now have Directv again. I was given the new customer deal and they installed the Directv HD-DVR and a standard receiver.

I probably should have had them put in a standard DVR instead of a receiver, but stupidly thought I didnt need it in the bedroom. Well, I really miss not having a DVR.

I want to hook up the old HR10-250 that I have and use it. It has been unplugged for well over a year. I do not have phone service in the place that I live in now. Will I be able to use the old HD TIVO without a phone? If so, will it need a phone line to upgrade the software? Can I just take it over to my parents and use their phone to upgrade it? Finally, I know that people get Popup Messages that say something to the affect "It has been *** days since your last call." Is there a way to turn that message off?

I plan on using this on a non-HD television with only one of the inputs.

Any help will be appreciated.

Yes to almost all of your post. You CAN use it, you CAN replace the receiver with it (for no additional charge - same mirroring fee) and you WILL get the call-in message.

The only no you'll get is to turning the nag screen off. It will remain there and there is no way to turn it off.

Will I need a phone line to reactivate it? I guess I can live with the messages. I have called Directv and they are sending a new access card. Will I just need to hook up the receiver, insert the new access card and then activate the new card?

Should do - just say yes when they ask if it's hooked up.

You will probably need to hook it up to your parents' phone line to get the updates though.

Thanks for the help. One last question. Do my parents need to have Directv? They have a landline phone. Can I take it anywhere that has a landline phone or will the location also need to have Directv?

You can take it anywhere. No requirement for D* where the unit is plugged in.
