Chaps, I think I may have this sussed, plan B appears to work...

To get the Wharfedale LPDV832B (not N) to power up after a power failure you

turn it on (not in standby)
cut the power (pull the plug)
jam the on button on on the front of the box
put the power back on and hey presto it comes back on when the power is restored

you can still change channel and operate the menus with the remote while it is like this too.

If you don't do step 1 when it powers up it shows the time for a minute or so and then goes to standby (I'm guessing this is doing a silent check for upgrade).

I've only tried this for a little while so can't comment on whether anything untoward eventually happens.

Bizarely enough you can even continue to use the on / off on the remote with it like this. In fact this appears ideal, if it is on when there is a power hit it turns itself on when the power comes back and if it is off when there is a power hit when power is restored it shows the time for a minute or two (update check??? is that what it means?) and then goes into standby.

Now I just need to arrange a way to jam the power on button on the front of it down (any suggestions - so far it is jammed against the back of the TV stand?).

I guess those who are a little braver may open the box up and short the on/off switch (I'm guessing that's what's required?)

Disclaimer:
Of course you try any of the above at your own risk and I accept absolutely no responsibility for any consequences.

Oh, Plan A was: put the timer on at 03:30 and off at 02:30 daily, but if you do that it still asks for confirmation when you try to change channel - not much use.

The main problem with the box being that the sound drops every 10mins or so. I've had enough of it - it's going back...
