Hi. I signed up for Tivo yesterday and am interested in getting the Tivo Desktop plus program because I'd like to be able to download videos to my Tivo. I've been unable to get the Tivo I was using to work with the digital converter box, so I've ordered an HD Tivo from Tivo that I am going to switch the service to.

Is there any reason I need to wait to buy the upgrade to the Desktop Plus until I get the new HD Tivo? Is it tied to the Tivo I have, or just to my desktop computer? I'd hate to buy it then find out I can't use it.

I've ordered this model
R65216 Tivo HD DVR.

I'm trying to get by without satellite TV, and found I can download some of my tv shows that I watch from their show websites, so thought this would be useful. If they aren't in the right format I have a program that will convert them.

You don't need to purchase the Plus upgrade to just download shows from your TiVo. I would recommend you just download the free version and check it out.

The Plus upgrade lets you send a wider variety of video types back to your TiVo, and also will convert downloaded shows for your iPod, PSP, etc.

You may find that a lot of your recordings are marked with the copy-protection flag by your provider, in which case you won't be able to download the recordings anyway.

I want to move shows from my computer to the Tivo. I didn't think I could do that with the free version? I can download the shows online, and I thought that would be an easy way to get them where I can watch them on the TV - I have ordered a cable so I can hook the computer up to the tv with the TV out connecter in my video card but this sounded easier.

Also I would like to be able to put them on my ipod sometimes as well.

Then yes, you would need the Plus version for those features.

Unless you want to check out free alternatives like pyTiVo for sending video back to your TiVo.
