3214 is only directv number i can find in the manual for my vl600 and it's not working

I guess the DTV protection plan should get me a new remote but i dont feel like calling at the moment so i'm trying to use the sony to make the tv watchable

any way to use HDTIVO remotes with hr20 maybe?

without a working hr20 remote i dont see how i can even program the sony

any idea what's up with the hr20 remote? I reset using 981 and fresh batteries are in it and the green light on the remote looks fine

the remote wont even control tv volume anymore so it must be dead

edit...they said try the 00001 code trick in addition to the 981 i already did but nothing..they said 3 days from fedex id get one. Didnt mention return of old one..do they want it back?

why, i tried what you said to, didnt work. Tv volume and on off still doesnt work. I only did the 981 as an extra step because on the other board someone suggested it.

The 981 wipes the remote clean of all codes, accept default IR code 00001 on the directv device. So you would have to reenter your brands tv code.

You know already that receiver isn't accepting default IR code, because entered code 00001 into the white remote, and code 3214 into the sony remote, neither is controlling the receiver right? Thats why I wanted you marry the RF remote to the receiver with the above directions.

To answer the question you posed in the thread title.
No, you can't use Sony or Hughes remotes with the HR20!

If the receiver were in IR mode, then yes the sony remote the OP has, rm-vl600, would work with HR20 using code SAT 3214. But you're right, no Hughes remote would.

Sorry, I assumed he meant the Sony remote for the Sony DVRs.

in case anyone else ever needs the info:

keywords: IR RF remote broke not work broken rc64r

edmund solved my issue..it appears my IR receiver on the HR20 is broken. This got me back working per his instructions:

------------------------

It could be the IR sensor, one more thing to try, see if code 00003 works the receiver:

1. dtv
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 0 0 0 0 3

If it doesn't work, then I'd say its the sensor. But you have a RF remote, now on purpose put the receiver into RF mode using the front panel keys. With tv tuned to the receiver, using the front panel keys enter the menu:

1. menu> parental, fav's, & setup> system setup> remote> IR/RF>

2. you will see either IR or RF, tap whichever to reveal both

3. press RF

4. press DONE

Now set the remote to RF mode:

a) dtv

b) press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks

c) enter 0 0 0 0 1

d) press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks

e) enter 9 6 1

f) press CH UP

g) enter the last 6 digits of the receiver ID #, found on a sticker in the access card compartment

h) press SELECT

got the new remote yesterday and as expected it didnt work..so the IR receiver must be dead but i like the hr20 box mostly so i'm just keeping it for now

wonder if they would even sent out another box since i'm on the protection plan or if a tech has to come out
