I think that I have already found the answer (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=322646) in an older TC thread (also a TC archive (http://archive.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/history/topic/182526-1.html) but I just wanted to check. My D*Tivo is a Samsung S2.

I will need to do the same for my DTV HR20 and I also need to keep my computer's broadband connection running. My PC (desktop) has just 1 ethernet connection.

Only certain USB2 adapters work. You failed to list the adapter type. Also this is the Directv TiVo forum, perhaps you will get a more informed answer in another forum. :)

Once activated the phone line is no longer need with the DirecTV Tivo. The HR20 doesn't require one either.

If you need more than one ethernet connection, you need an ethernet switch.

DirecTV TiVos cannot use USB Ethernet adapters to "phone home". But as Jim says, you really don't need to connect it to the phone. The DTiVos will give you a nag message after a month, but everything will still work except ordering PPV through the remote (use the web site.)

The HR20 has an Ethernet jack. You need a router (a switch will not suffice.)

My computer has "female" USB 2 "ports" (jacks). My D*Tivo was activated several years ago. PPV ordering is not an issue for me as I never order movies. So for the HR20 will I need a router and an ethernet "adapter" to maintain my cable broadband connection? Thanks for the replies.

Do I assume that you have a DSL or cable modem connected directly to your PC? If so, then yes, you will need a router (any inexpensive router will work, and those with wireless capability are easier to find nowadays). The DSL/cable modem would connect to the router (by Ethernet) and then you would connect the PC and HR20 to the router. Using a router also improves your security by adding a hardware firewall between you and the Internet.

Unless the DSL/cable modem is also a router as is mine.
