View Full Version : Reboots - possible workaround?
Ever since my R10 was updated from ver. 6.2a, it has suffered from the frequent reboot problem. This has continued through versions 6.3 and 6.4. Sometimes it will reboot every night, then stay up for a few days, then back to the nightly reboot. It's even rebooted occasionally while watching a program, but rarely has gone more than a day or two without rebooting, mostly overnight. I know when it's rebooted as I lose my onscreen clock and 30 second skip.
However, during the recent Olympics, we were recording 12+ hours of programming a day, much of it late at night, and the unit didn't reboot once during the 2+ weeks. As soon as the Olympics were over, it rebooted every night as we were not recording anything during the late night hours.
So, as an experiment, I've set up a recording (I'm using the NASA channel) for each night from 12:00-03:00am, keeping only one episode. So far, over 2 days, no reboots at night. I know this isn't conclusive, so I'll be watching each morning to see if it stays running.
My workaround must be working. Since I added that late night recording, I haven't experienced one reboot.

It's good that work around is working for you. However, one other thing you could try. It's drastic, but maybe a clear and delete everything would help clear out whatever is causing the problem.

I'll give it a shot. I'm tired of my HR10 rebooting almost every day. It always seems to be in the middle of some program we are recording.
Jim, with over 30 season passes and numerous wish lists plus quite a few hours of recorded programming waiting to be viewed, there is no way I'm going to clear that out and start over :) As long as my work around seems keeps it from rebooting, I'm happy.

Sorry, in my case i have actually had recordings split during a reboot (i.e. Graham Norton, Top Gear, Corner Gas etc). So it has no effect on my units. ..which by the way both TiVo's have brand new hard drives (less then 2-months old). Reboot before the new HD and reboot after (although no reboots on one when it had 6.2 on it). In one case i did not use the old drive to make a new drive. It was a fresh install from D* (upgrade from 6.2 to 6.4a via a D* download). Two or three software versions back we were having daily reboot issues. D* determined (rather members here determined) that is was due to the enhanced guide data was giving the TiVos fits. They released the new software to fix that problem (i think 6.2 was supposed to fix that). ??? Imho, I think they are sending something out in the data stream for the other PVRs that the TiVos are choking on. This is the main reason i think they are going to release a HD TiVo next year. I think this the only way they are going to get the older TiVo's off the system. They use to say that they did not care about the TiVo units as natural attrition would take them off the system but (unfortunately for D*) the TiVo owners have become to good at keeping their units running and i think few are dieing. :-p

I'd be in the same boat as you. I guess it was more of a point to others who don't have their units loaded up as much.
