I may soon inherit an HR10-250 from a friend who upgraded to DirecTV's HD DVR when the HDD died on the Hughes. I can easily put a new HDD into the HR10-250, but at this time I'm not interested in upgrading my round dish.

Before you tell me I need at least an oval dish to get HD channels, let me point out I'm *not* interested in getting HD channels from DTV; I'm only interested in using the HR10-250 for its ATSC tuner to get OTA HD while keeping all of my current SD channels -- and using only one box instead of stacking a separate ATSC tuner on top of my current HDVR2.

Can anyone tell me if this is possible? Will I run into technical problems, setup/activation problems with DTV, or both?

It will work fine. Just tell the satellite setup that you have a round dish. DTV won't care, though they'll push you to replace it anyway. They will make you buy HD Access for $9.95/mo, though.

I have this set up right now. I just watch and record HD OTA channels and SD from DTV.

They only hang up was getting the unit activated as it required a new access card for some reason.

Will I have to pay that even if I don't receive any HD channels, or are you just saying they'll push me to upgrade all the way?
