Looking to buy a used directivo dsr 708 to replace my old one. It seems to have a bad tuner. Are there any extra costs with activating a used receiver if it has no unpaid balance. Do I just call directv and ask them to activate the receiver? Will they activate old receivers with tivo?

There should be no problem with activating a used DirecTV with TiVo as long it is free of any charges. However, DirecTV will need to send you a new access card ($20).

Be sure and tell the DirecTV rep. that you want to activate the new DirecTivo because you're old one died. There's a chance they'll let you move the old access card to the new machine at no charge.

Buy a non-rid box instead. DSR7000 or HDVR2.

Thanks for the info.....I appreciate it a lot. I have one more question. If it comes with a card why would they have to send me a new one.

I think that's a question that only D* has the answer to.

If you buy a non-RID Dtivo, you can switch the access card yourself without DTV ever having to know.

Yep, I sent a PM to the OP... explaining what to do.

The Tivo does not have a bad tuner. Do a search and you will see others with the same problem. The issue seems to be with the power supply.

I guess the OP posted somewhere else.... that you would know to make this statement.

Ok, I'll ask you why are you making that statement? The OP mentioned in the first post that the tuner was bad, techdreamer thinks there's another cause, what's missing that you thing there's another post with added info?

My question is... how would techdreamer know that? Unless the OP posted somewhere else and gave more information.

What points techdreamer to it being a power supply problem?

What TechDreamer is referring to is that some TiVo models have a problem with tuner 2 when using the composite outputs. Try using the s-video if you can.

Right, now that one I have heard of. But never heard that it points to a bad power supply.

I guess because the tuner 2 and composite output circuitry shorting could give the symptoms of a PS problem. :)

Well I have come across another problem besides the pixelation on tuner 2. I switched the cables between tuner 1 and 2 and 2 still has the problem. I get a message every so often come up saying searching for signal on tuner 2.
In the last few days I will be watching live tv or a recording and it will just freeze and I have to restart it. So I guess I will just buy a new r15 and be done with it. This thing is driving me crazy not being able to see so many channels. Thanks for the help and suggestions.

I would not get the R15 but that's just me I guess.

I wouldn't say $100 is reasonable when you can get a used unit off ebay for $50.

I wouldn't say $100 is reasonable when you can get a used unit off ebay for $50.In Colorado electricians get $80.00 an hour plus travel time. Many people have been burned by TiVo's from Ebay. Maybe you would be willing to sell one of your TiVo's for $50.00 and eliminate his risk or travel to his house and fix his unit for $50.00. I have no relationship with CCS, I only know they do good work as reported in this forum. :)

Well, if you purchase only non-RID DTivos from a reputable seller, I'd say the risk is minimal. If CCS does do good work, that's great. In my opinion, even if they do good work, $100 is not a deal. In fact, that's more than I paid for 2 of my five DTivos brand new without any kind of added commitment whatsoever.

I'm not saying its not worthwhile to someone. Just that, to me, its akin to doing a $2000 repair on a 1990 ford Escort. You better really love that car to put that kind of money into it. But feel free to pimp away.:D
