My HDVR2 died Friday. Totally dead...no lights, no fan, nothing except a faint clicking noise from the power supply. The unit gave no indication prior to this that it was failing. Thinking it was the power supply I replaced the it with a known good power supply pulled from a twin model (SDVR40) I had deactivated a couple of years ago (due to one of the two tuners failing). The HDVR2 was still dead.

At this point I'm assuming my HDVR2 is toast and beyond a simple fix. Could this be caused by a bad hard drive? I'm thinking it is the motherboard if only because there were no prior indications of trouble. Any suggestions?

I had a similar problem once. It was acting up, and re-booting all the time so I took out the second hard drive to see if that was the problem. I let it boot up, and then it just froze. After trying to re-boot again, everything was dead. No lights or fan, and I could not hear the hard drive spinning.

I decided for $20 it would be worth a try, so I ordered a copy of Instant Cake, and installed it on one of the hard drives. The TiVo came back to life and is still working today. It did turn out that the main (original) hd was the bad one.

Thanks for the replies

I might try replacing the hard drive to see if that makes the unit show any life. In any case, I've already deactivated the HDVR2 with DirecTV and have am going to upgrade to HD. Installation set for 9/2. I've been itching to upgrade to HD for awhile and the HDVR2 failing gave me the perfect excuse. I am not looking forward to losing the Tivo interface though.
