I currently own a S2 Tivo with a 2 year service contract (1 year left on it). I'm interested in upgrading to a TivoHD, and I'd like to get the $179 web special. Is there any way to do so without having to order more service?

If it would make a difference, I'd even be willing to pre-pay the next year instead of being month by month if Tivo will allow it.

Do you mean transfer your S2 subscription to the TiVo HD?

As I think modnar is alluding to, if you buy a TiVo from TiVo, you will be required to purchase a subscription with it.

However, if you buy the box from anywhere other than TiVo's website, you can just go into the "Manage my Account" link the TiVo site and swap the service to the TSN from your new TiVoHD.

There have to be some decent offers around at retail so you can avoid buying from TiVo.

What you are referring to is the TiVo HD refurb. I just went through this process getting new units. They will not let the refurb units receive multi-unit discounts. However they will let you get the refurb as a main unit and have multi-unit discounts on other non-refurb boxes. I complained about it and they offered me $199 for a brand new TiVo HD. Just call them and tell them you were offered a new unit for $199 and you want to take that deal. They are also offering brand new S2 for $69. I bought 1 refurb off the website and then got 3 TiVo HD units from CS for $199 after complaining about the multi-unit pricing not being available for refurbs.

Thanks for the answers. I AM looking to replace my S2 with a TivoHD, so it won't be multi-unit. I'll give CS a call today to see if they'll give me the $179 price.

So I called in and customer support transferred me to the sales department, and the guy said that I have to buy a new TivoHD, and they won't get me the $179 price. They didn't even offer $199 or anything. Does anyone have any tips on calling back and getting a better deal? The best I can find is new from Amazon at $249ish.

my sister had the same problem
I end up emailing tivoStephen who put me in contact with a CS supervisor. That guy was able to sell a hd unit for $199 (~) & transfer the existing contract to the new unit. She was willing to start a whole new contract but tivo was ok with transfering.

Try CS again but put together a email for tivoStephen/pony while oh hold.
