View Full Version : Freezing Programs

I have a DirectTV Hughes Tivo Receiver.
My Problem, which I have had for some time now, is that my Tivo occasionally "Freezes up"
You can still hear the audio clearly, but the picture is frozen in a perpetual "Pause"
If you change the channel or hit Live TV, the next screen is black with no Sound or anything.
You can still, however, view previously recorded Programs, hell you can even rewind all the way back to BEFORE the recording "froze up"
The occurrences are random and without much notice. Sometimes it happens @ night, sometimes in the middle of the day, sometimes not at all.
Every time it happens I have to reboot to get it going again.
Sometimes it will freeze up again after it has been for a few minutes, sometimes DAYS later.
Is my hard drive failing?
Is there some other problem I do not know about....
Thanx,
Ray

Could be the Hard Drive starting to fail. That is the case 75% of the time. You can get a imaged drive from drvupgrade or just buy Instantcake and image the drive yourself. Because drive prices are cheap now recommend you get a larger drive in this market. Do not install a used drive, that is a failure waiting to happen. :)

How are you connected from DTivo to TV?
This is rare, but I have one DTivo that WAS connected by coax which just stopped working one day... so that unit is now connected to the TV by 3-wire RCA and works fine

I ran into this problem the other night on my Hughes DVR40 with an instancaked drive. NBC was frozen but I could change to any other channel it was working fine, but when I changed back to NBC it was now the picture of the last channel that was on. If you hit info it displayed correctly and the guide displays properly only that one channel's picture is frozen but the sound is correct. I rebooted the unit and everything has been fine since.

I have had the same problem with my Series 2 Directv Tivo, on and off for about two months.
Directv told me to reset it (I lost everything on it) and that seemed to clear it up for a while...now it is at it again. Sometimes it's a "self" restart...sometimes it freezes...and then the newest is no picture, just sound.
Last night it restarted itself twice. :(
Any ideas?

I use the typical 3 line RCA Cables.
I have checked the connections, and all lines are just fine.

Thanks for the link...I emailed ccscorporation and they told me that they don't repair that model.... "too flakey" was the reason :( Oh well...will probably replace it when it drives me really crazy!

I have a RCA DVR80 directivo. I started having problems a week or 2 after they installed the latest software 6.4a something. The picture would stutter. If you tried
to get into the menu, it would never complete painting on the screen. After a couple of
minutes, the tivo would reboot. This happened about once a week. Now it is happening a couple of times a day.
I am hoping to pull the HD to look at the message log, to see if it reallt is tge HD. All
directv can tell me is to reformat the drive.
