View Full Version : Desktop Plus with 3 entries per file?

I finally am switching away from Directv's tivos to get tivo HD's...I am quite excited to get the HMO features other tivos have had for years ;)

I have one installed (9.4 software), and have tivo desktop plus (2.6.2) installed on my PC.

The weird symptom I see is every time I transfer a from the TivoHD, I get 3 entries in my pc's "now playing list" as soon as transfer begins, and even when it completes there are 3 entries for each. If I delete one, they all 3 disappear. If I view it from the Tivo, it also sees 3x the entries. I have tried rebooting the system and clearing the .cache files, but I still see the 3 entries per show. Looking at the directory, there IS only one file each, no extra system or hidden files there...

The only thing I think slightly different in my setup is that I have set the pc's "My Tivo Recordings" directory to be on an external USB drive (j:\tivo).
If I point it back to the default place, it seems to only make 1 entry for new transfers, but still shows the contents of j:\tivo with 2 entries per transfer (though it is no longer pointed to in preferences anywhere??). Even after clearing the cache/restarting, I still see the 2x the contents of j:\tivo, and hitting "play" on those entries works.

Does anyone have any thoughts here? I haven't read of anyone else getting multiple entries or any of this strange behavior...

Incidentally, how slow IS the transfer for others? I asked Tivo tech support presales if it was limited by the tivo or the network - they said network. I then asked if then wired would be faster and they said yes. Just for fun I have tried both and the speed seems the same, and quite slow, roughly 30 min for 1.6GB (a 1 hour show recorded of basic cable...I am afraid what will happen with real high def...)

Thanks for any insights!

Look for shortcuts in your TiVo recordings folder

Thanks Bob!

I hadn't noticed the .lnk file sitting there...sure enough a circular reference to the same directory. I have no idea how it got there, but it is gone now ;)

Regarding speed, are my numbers in line with others? Either via wireless G or wired 100Mb, it is taking on the order of 19 min / gigabyte...sounds to be in the neighborhood of 7 Mbits /sec. That seems rather slow to me if it really was limited by network speed. Is My HD extra slow at serving? I had asked two different techs presales the same question about wired faster than wireless for getting data and they both thought faster network = faster transfers.

Thanks again

Transfer speeds are limited by the TiVo itself and not your network. Remember your TiVo is an appliance and not a general purpose PC with a processor and RAM that cost more than the whole TiVo did. Transfers are a background task and due to DRM restrictions require actual processing by the processor itself to format and encode the data as it is sent out or decode and reformat the data as it comes back in. Your speeds don't sound out of line, but you can check them against the FAQ sticky thread in the Series 3 forum if you want to be sure about it.
