Hi Guys

A recent post in a big Aussie forum (http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?s=&showtopic=69977&view=findpost&p=1142753)has made some claims I don't believe to be true. There has been an awful lot of TiVo bashing going on here since the TiVo was introduced, and I've been trying to combat it. Here's what was said...

I heard today from someone in the industry that Tivo has been getting bad raps for showing banners accross the screen for advertising purposes.

They say that having tivo is like big brother watching your tv viewing habits and that after time they will start running a banner across the bottom of the screen advertising stuff and apparently you cant disable it.

They also said that it has been totaly taken out of the UK market for that reason.

If this is true then I wont buy Tivo, that would drive me bonkers.

Can anyone confirm that this is the case over in the UK?

Now, I know that TiVo's withdrawal from the UK market happened ages ago and had nothing to do with any form of advertising, except perhaps a shortage of advertising for TiVo itself!

However, this guy wants "confirmation." :)

Would anybody care to nip over there and oblige him? :)

You need to register to post (quick and painless) on that site, alternatively post here and I'll link back to this site!

Cheers
Ron

Thanks blindlemon! That was quick. :)

My God, there is some rubbish being spouted about TiVo in Australia, I've been using hacked ones here since 2001, and was really looking forward to the real ones coming out. (I've got two already, one just upgraded to 500GB last weekend).

I would have thought people would be happy, especially since we're the only market without a monthly fee, but no, they go on and on about how we don't have all the features of the US ones yet (they have been promised) and how there might be extra advertising. I've tried to explain repeatedly how the TiVo advertising works in the US (it's pretty much all "opt in" by clicking something) but hardly anybody seems to "get it."
