My Directv HR10-250 just keeps looping on the "welcome, powering up.." screen. I am almost sure that my HDD is done, so I want to replace it.
Can I just go into a computer store and buy a HDD and replace it or does it need certain "specifications" and programing ?
I know how to replace a HDD in a computer, would it be the same in my receiver ?
Thanks

Check out the resources in the "Tivo Upgrade Center Forum" here. You can download the software tools needed, or buy pre-imaged drives from sources like http://www.weaknees.com and http://www.9thtee.com

The only requirement is that it be AT LEAST as large as the original disk, even if it's off by a few bytes you'll have problems. So, best advice is to get a larger drive. Software can be had online at various places, just make sure it matches you receiver. With a fresh install you'll have to call in at least once too.

Having recently installed a Weaknees 300gb in my HR10, I can not fathom why anyone would choose to "roll their own".
For $150, I got a drive that fits, and preloaded with Tivo software. Installation took 10 minutes. You do have to go through an initial start-up, just as though you were buying a new DVR, but it was painless. And there is no need to actually call D* to activate the box, although the guided set-up does tell you to do so.
Anyway, for me, $150 was a very small price to pay to not have to jump through any of the hacker stuff that you need to do if you get a drive from another source.
YMMV, IMHO, AFAIC and all that jazz.

I bought a 320GB drive for $130, Canadian, from my local small town computer store, back in May. A similar drive, purchased from a majore online or B&M retailer, in US dollars, could be at least 30% less sticker price.
Just to copy your drive is relatively free, for the cost of a blank CDR and a bit more time.
Also, I like getting my hands a bit dirty, now and again.
