I have 2 S3 tivo HDs (one refurbished) connected to my airport network wirelessly. One tivo (family room) is running a multistream digital cablecard; the bedroom tivo has no card. The problem: I can transfer most shows from the bedroom to the family room tivo, but almost ALL shows on the family room tivo (the one with the cablecard) will not transfer - they have the red circle with slash symbol. I wondered if it is a digital cable issue - i need the card to decode the digital single when going from family room to bedroom, but not the other way. Curiously, shows that were recorded by the family room tivo as tivo suggestions, even if on the same channel and same show as a scheduled recording, WILL typically transfer to the bedroom. Any ideas?

BTW, both tivos are running 9.x software (the newest update) and transfers are enabled for both at tivo.com.

TIA,

Fred

Nope. The red circle means the your CATV provider has marked the content as copy protected. The TiVo will not transfer this material. It is a requirement of CableLabs in order to obtain CableCard certification. Without it, your S3 could not receive those channels at all. The videos in the other room were no doubt recorded from analog carriers on the CATV system. Many CATV providers deliver both a digital and an ananlog version of at least some of their programming.

BTW, adding cablecards to the second TiVo will not permit transfer of shows if recorded on digital cable with the copy protection flag set.

I understand what the red circle means copy protection is set. How come, though, the exact same show recorded on the exact same channel in the bedroom CAN be transferred to the family room tivo? Cox San Diego Nikolodean is channel 59. If I record a show on ch 59 on the Family Room, it will not transfer to the bedroom Tivo (red circle). Recording the SAME SHOW on the bedroom tivo, WILL transfer to the family room tivo (no red circle). Are the flags only set/enforced by the cablecard?

I just re-read lrhorer's post more closely. It sounds like the analog signal does not (or cannot?) have a copy protection flag set, so transfers are allowed. Because the family room tivo has a cablecard, it automatically reads the digital version of the same broadcast, which does have the flag set. Dumb question #2: Is there a way to force the family room tivo to record the analog version of the same show, thereby allowing transfers??? (I had to ask!)

I don't think so. Some CPs (cable providers) automatically remap digital to analog channels when the receiver can handle them. TWC in Ohio does not. You could ask your CP to see. They may think you're odd, asking for analog when digital is "so much better".

Are you saying I cannot watch a digital show recorded on one of my tivo #1 on my tivo#2?

That was the point of me buying tivo #2.

Right, if your provider is setting the copy-protect flag on those digital channels. Brighthouse does that here as well. I can't transfer anything between my S3 and THD except for the local HD channels and the analog cable tier. :(
