View Full Version : Are these issues (sound gaps / picture freeze) due to Tivo or Cablecard?

Does anyone know how I can troubleshoot this... is it most likely due to the Tivo box or the comcast cable card? Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Oh the box says my cable card signal is 100% ... so should I exchange my tivo? Or, is the issue just gonna happen anywhere?

Can I take out the cable card on my own and put it back in & reset? Maybe I should do this before exchanging.

Why do you not believe it is your cable signal strength? I've long had similar symptoms with cable signal problems (both too high and too low a signal). In my area (Comcast cable, in the Silicon Valley area), we had a similar problem over a couple of years when the temperature got cooler (< 50F at night time, & winter). In our case, it was rather obvious it was associated with sunset. Comcast eventually diagnosed the problem (too much signal when cooler) and, after several attempted repairs (to their repeaters on the poles), finally got it mostly under control.

I'm sure the problem also would happen if the signal was too weak (squirrels or rats eating on the cable, water leaking into the dielectric space on the cable, etc.).

oh you're saying it could be from the signal being too strong? i didnt think of this... i didn't think it had to do w/ signal strength since it said it was 100%. how did you get comcast to come out and not just blame it on tivo? were their regular box users having problems? getting comcast to do anything is a little challenging

That's part of the challenge I've had with my TiVo S3. Side-by-side and swapping inputs with the cable company's Motorola DCT-3416, the TiVo flaked out quite often, while the Motorola had no problem, with the same programming; never was it the other way 'round. :(

Didn't have any issues with the video portion locking up until the recent update 9.4 installed

ugh. yeah i had a feeling that was the case. the older motorola dvrs that comcast gave for $12 a month were horrible though... well depending on your luck. mine used to freeze for 10-15 seconds and/or not respond to the remote... was so annoying. the last box i had was a little bit better though.
