Tivo and IR Blaster problem

I have a series 2 tivo, and it's been working fine for a long time.

I just got a directv HD receiver, no dvr, and want to hook it to the Tivo.

It works fine. The Tivo can see the 480i image out of the receiver and can record it.

The problem is the IR blasters. They were working ok at first, but then I moved the boxes a bit and they started messing up. Instead of going to channel 204, for instance, they'd start going to channel 24, or 20 or something, as if the thing was not sending all the digits. Now it seems they don't want to work at all, let alone in a flaky manner

Are the cables this fragile and are broken? This is the second set of them I'm on now. Is there something else I should look at?

If you have a digital camera or camcorder, you can look at the emitters with it and see if the emit a purplish flash on a channel change.

IMHO, I'd try a 3rd party more robust blaster, or the USB serial adapter from patersontech.
