The basics of my situation:
I got married a month ago and moved into my Wife's townhouse. She already has DirecTV service and 2, series 2 DirecTivos and 2 additional DirecTV hookups with no DVR's. We are going to upgrade the system and ideally we would like to add 2 more series 2 DirecTivos and also a DirecTV DVR. I'm going to zipper the series 2 models so we can record in one location and watch in another room. I'm aware this will not be possible with the DirecTV DVR. (for some reason her oldest son wants a DirecTV DVR intead of a series 2 DirecTivo).
I know that I'll have to buy the additional DirecTivos reconditioned or off eBay but my main question at this point is, is it possible for us to have 5 DVR's (4 DirecTivos and 1 DirecTV DVR) with a single account? I figure we'll just need to get a multiswitch with enough outputs.
Thanks,
Chris

Yes. There is no (obvious) limit to the number of DVRs you can have - and no extra fees either!

As long as you are willing to pay the additional fees and mirroring charges they are more than willing to collect your money. I think that I recall hearing a limit of 10 at one point and time, but not sure if that is still the case or not. I know of a guy over on the other forum that says he has 9 on his system, so I would guess up to 10 at the minimum.

Yes - I know people with many more. You may find DirecTV gives you more scrutiny if you have more than 5 to make sure you actually control all the receivers, but I've read of setups with 10 or more.

No additional DVR fees. There would still be the additional 4.99/month mirroring fee. Right?

I heard 8 may be a limit, but not sure. You should be fine just have to pay a mirroring fee for 4 of them.
Dang - real slow this time.... :)

Correct, except they now call it a lease fee. ;)

Right. The OP said he was replacing receivers with DVRs, so the mirroring fees already apply.
Sorry for not being clear.

Are they (HR10-250)still leased if he buys them off of eBay? I can never get a straight answer off of this one.

No, they're owned, but you have to make sure the CSR labels them that way when you call to activate.

Exactly, if you don't say anything they will default to leased.

I have 8 HR10s, 7 HR2xs and 4 SD DVR-400s with no problem. I am in the process of moving to all HD and have balked to changing all owned HR10s until they will exchange them as owned so I can legitimately upgrade the Hard drives internally.

If you hack them, you won't need two in the bedroom. You would have access to MRV.

rbtravis,
An SD DVR-400 is an upgraded zippered Hughes SD-DVR40 with a Seagate 400 GB drive replacement. All of my D* tivos have either 400 GB drives if SD and 750 GB drives if HR10s.
I know what a hobby.

So I guess that would make the HR10 a HR10-750.
