View Full Version : TiVoHD Web Interface or MRV causes UI freeze/reboot

Howdy, all! On the first of August we got the Summer 2008 update. About a week later our TiVoHD started rebooting and freezing in a very odd way. You'd hit pause and seven minutes later (we timed it!) the TiVo would pause. In addition, it was rebooting at a rate slightly faster than once an hour. It took awhile to realize that the cause was a process I was running on my computer that was downloading the nowplaying xml off the web interface once every half hour (or trying to). Once I turned that off (and rebooted), the TiVo works fine.... well...

If I use MRV from our S2 upstairs (even just browsing) the problems start up again, and a simple attempted view of the nowplaying web interface (https) causes the symptoms to reappear -- several minutes between remote button push and action, plus an eventual reboot. I say attempted view because the web interface never comes up, eventually timing out.

Basically, trying to access the web interface or MRV causes the system to nearly lock up and eventually reboot. That's unacceptable for the things we use this for (we use MRV and web interface on a daily basis).

I've done Kickstarts 57, 58 and 52. Any ideas? I do not have an external drive, and the unit is eight months old, so TiVo offered to swap it, but it's pretty obvious it is a software or database issue, and I'd rather just get this one working. That plus I'd like to download some of the shows currently on there.

Thank you.

Wired or wireless? If wireless, I'd disconnect and reconnect - perhaps rerunning network setup. If wired, I'd look into a RMA.

Wired. RMA is a possibility, but I would prefer a "nuke the database and rebuild" option, as I know this unit has been good until now (and this really seems like a software issue). I can ping and see the unit -- and semi-access it, as hitting the web interface causes the lockup, so I know I'm "accessing" it; I just don't get any content returned from the GET.

I told my wife to catch up on Psych and Burn Notice, as we'll likely have a new unit without any recordings soon. Ah, well.

As an epilogue: Replacement it is, should somebody with these same symptoms read this... since it's an unmodified unit under full replacement warranty, we went that route. It's nearly certainly a software error, so if you have the same issue and are at a loss, you might try reformatting the drives (or upgrading them).

As a further note, the problem has spontaneously fixed itself. I'm curious if a minor update was fired down the line or if some kind of database or file error cleared itself.

Unfortunately I must report the same problem after receiving the summer update. I don' think the RMA route is the way to go, this is clearly a software issue that appeared with the summer update. I am hopeful TiVo has been able to recreate this in the lab and has a fix ready for testing or deployment very soon. Considering the amount of money I've spent on TiVo including lifetime and monthly subscriptions, this is a real disappointment that they didn't catch this before the summer update was released...
