I just purchased an older Philips DirecTV receiver with TiVo. I'm going to activate it today, and I've been seeing information on this board about "6.4a" software. I'm assuming this is the latest version of software for the hardware, and from my reading it seems like the box will update itself automatically after activation. Can anyone confirm if that's really the case?
It seems like there's a lot of good information here about the DirecTV TiVo boxes, so I'll keep reading on the site, but are there any other "quick hit" things I should know about the box?
Thanks in advance for your help!

If the phone line is connected, it should update to 6.4a automatically. Expect it to take a few days before you see the update. Note 6.4a is just for the Rev 2 DirecTivo(s) - those with USB ports on the back. The Rev 1 DirecTivo's run 3.5.x I believe.

If your DVR is other than the DSR6000 (which is a Series 1 based unit), you will get 6.4, if all goes well.

I've got it hooked up and the phone line tests out OK. I'll check it periodically over the next week to see if it updates.

FYI, I just dropped a new HD into my R10, and it took almost two weeks for it to download 6.4.

FYI, I just dropped a new HD into my R10, and it took almost two weeks for it to download 6.4.Ugh...I think I saw an option to force a phone call in the menu. Maybe I'll try that.
Also, I had something strange happen this morning. The activation went fine yesterday, but I couldn't get the receiver to power up this morning. The power was on, but the receiver wouldn't respond to any commands (neither from the front-panel controls nor from the remote control). I disconnected the receiver from the wall panel and plugged it back in, and the receiver completed its normal power-up sequence with no problems.
Everything seems fine now, but I wonder if this is the first sign that I might be purchasing a new hard drive from that Weeknees site! (Although, this would not exactly be a hardship... ;) )

I don't think that will help. I did that throughout the first week, and got nowhere. I called Directv and they said that it would happen when it happens. :)
It happened on day 12. :)
