View Full Version : Music files will not play

I'm a long-time Galleon user and it's been working ok for a long time. Recently, I noticed that music files would not play (using Galleon 2.5.2). Thinking maybe some components were out of date, I downloaded and installed the latest Tivo Desktop app (2.6.2).
I have the same problem using both Tivo Desktop and Galleon: I can see the music files on the Tivo, but they never start playing. Photos and other functions seem to work ok with both Galleon and Tivo Desktop, but music won't play. I'm using a wired network and nothing has changed in my network setup.
If anybody has troubleshooting ideas, please share them!

I've had this happen on occasion, restarting the TiVo usually clears it up.
As best I can remember, this happens sometimes when you abruptly stop a playing MP3 in any HME application, and it affects both HME and HMO apps.

You were right, restarting got it going again. The problem seems to be happen when I attempt to play .m3u playlists which point to an internet radio station. Sometimes the 1st playlist will work, but it will choke when I try to play a second one. With some playlists, the sound never starts and I have to restart the Tivo to get it to play any kind of music file after that.
I've been able to stream internet radio sites in the past using Galleon without so many problems. Has something changed in the Tivo software that's causing this now? Is there any workaround to make this work? Is streaming internet radio a supported feature, or is just a hack, anyway?

TiVo changed something about the music protocol a few versions back and it hasn't worked quite right since. Unfortunately they haven't updated the SDK in ages so if there is a new/better way to feed music to the TiVo we don't know about it.

That's too bad. Since it fails with the lastest Tivo Desktop as well as with Galleon, it sounds like a bug. I wonder if Tivo ever really supported this feature, or if it was just a hack that worked for a while, then stopped? I wonder if they use the same code for Rhapsody, Live360, etc.? If they do, then it seems as though it should work without hanging the box up.
Sounds like I may have to move to a Slingbox or something similar to get this kind of functionality.

Rhapsody and Live365 use different interface code. They use HME, but I suspect the native player in the TiVo works the same behind the scenes. My guess is the change to it, was to make Rhapsody work better. Still, there are some Podcasts that cause this problem too, and podcaster is also an HME application. For instance try Coverville, but be prepared to reboot the TiVo afterward to get the audio player back.
This is an area that definitely needs work on the TiVo side.

Music streams work with the HME 1.4 jar, but do not work with HME 1.4.1 experimental. Protocol version 0.45 seemed to add a parameter map for streams which there is probably something you need to add to it in order to get music files to work.

Sorry, I didn't follow that. What apps are using 1.4.1 vs 1.4? How does protocol version .45 fit in?
What does this mean for the prospects for playing streams in future versions of Galleon, etc.?

I was just making a general statement about HME since the behavior you are seeing is exactly the same with the newer protocol version. If you are using any app in galleon that uses the newer version of HME 1.4.1 or have added the HME 1.4.1 jar to the classpath, it will cause the music apps to not actually play the music stream, but will otherwise appear to function except no audio will actually play.
HME 1.4 uses protocol version 0.41 and HME 1.4.1 uses protocol version 0.45. The way you would normally play a music file in 1.4 does not work the same in 1.4.1 and it is not documented how to get it working.

Friends...
Long time user of music play. Re-boot of S2 allows 1 song to play and then hangs.
Re-boot of S2 1 more MP3 then hang
This is new behavior and very confusing.
Any ideas on a fix or is my S2 at EOL?
