View Full Version : How Many Are Experiencing Freezing/Hanging with the HR10 250?

In the stability and performance thread, another forum member who lives close to me pointed out having a similar problem to me. Since the new software update, the HR10 250 seems to get stuck in a particular OTA channel. It is usually a sub-channel, but it seems to happen on other channels as well.
I had only experienced this when surfing, but over the last couple of weeks, some shows were not recorded due to this problem. The show showed up in the "now playing" list, but it had a 0:00 running time. :(
How many of you experiencing this problem as well?

No problems here with my HR10-250.

I documented my issues with hanging/rebooting in this thread:
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=388023
To summarize, it seemed that my system was getting progressively worse with each SW update. At first it did seem to be OTA based, but over time I found issues with non-OTA recordings, both HD and SD.
While many here said it would not help, I took a chance replaced the harddrive with a 300g Weaknees model, and have had 100% reliability since then. Prior to the swap, I would get hanging/reboots daily.
YMMV, but if you are really wedded to Tivo, as we are, $150 to extend its useful life was money very well spent, even though we will soon lose access to all sat based HD channels.

Well, I'm glad to hear that. It's more reassuring than its being a software issue.
Edit: I just read your post in the thread that you linked. When HR10 froze, did it freeze and there was no way to get it to wake up? That's what happens to me.

My HR10 with 3.5 has no problems - ever. My other HR10 with 6.4 has not shown any problems yet. However, both of my HR20s freeze weekly (sorry couldn't resist).

Well, it would usually not just freeze out of the blue...actually, it would start pausing, pixilating, and stuttering (for lack of a better word). If I took no action, it would get worse and eventually reboot.
When I observed that behavior, I found that if I could get back to the Tivo main menu before it booted, it would stabilize, and I would be able to resume what I was watching w/o issue.
Of course, we would often wake up to find recordings that were saved in two parts, a tell tale sign that an overnight recording was interrupted by a spontaneous reboot.
Now that I think about it, before 6.3F came out, there were in fact a couple instances where it did freeze solid. In those cases, I had to pull the power cord. In fact it happened once to my wife while I was out of town, and I had to walk her through reaching into the equipment rack and blindly pulling and re-inserting the power cord.
That event hastened my decision to take a chance on a new drive.
Good luck with your HR10.

Very few posts anymore about "random freezing" with v6.4a software. I would be looking at hard drive issues.

That's good to hear. I'm going to try to activate the unit I just bought on eBay and see how that works.

I have the HR10 and HR20 and have absolutely no problems with either of them!

FWIW (and I think I'm the other member near you!), I've only seen this while surfing on live TV. However, I haven't recorded anything off of the suspect channels, either on purpose or as a Tivo suggestion, so will try a few and see what happens.

I'm having this problem. My brother too! Seemed to have started with the 6.4a update, no problems before.
It sometimes gets stuck on OTA SF 9.1 as I'm surfing. The weird thing is that picture and sound from the channel is OK, BUT the receiver just won't respond to anything from the remote or front panel buttons. Removing the access card didn't help. I had to reboot it to get control again. During this time, recordings on this channel would show up with 0:00 time. Recordings of other channels are OK since it can use the other tuner.
The last time this happened, I decided to leave it alone and check on it the next morning. It got unstuck the next morning. ??? It even executed what buttons I had pressed the previouse night (in this case it was Standby since it was in Standby that morning.) I know that it didn't reboot since the 30 seconds skip was still enabled.
I personally don' think it's a hard drive problem. I ran the drive's diagnostic a couple months back without any errors. I'll do it again when I get a chance.

My HR10 has begun freezing since 6.4A - it was fine before that.

I don't have freezing issues (replaced the HDDs and Power supplies in both). But, since the last SW update, neither HR10-250 works with FF1. If I try to FF using the first click, the picture pauses and eventually goes black. If I push play it starts where I first pushed FF. FF2 and FF3 work fine.
I'd think it was some HW issue, but both Tivos recently received that SW update and both have the same problem.
Any others?
