Since many on this site have large LCD Tv's with their TIVO's I thought I would post this.

West Haven Child Crushed by TV Dies

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- A two-year-old girl who pulled a large television set onto herself, becoming trapped last month, has died from her injuries.

Janiya Powe-Santiago of West Haven had been in grave condition since the July 25 accident at a family friend's house, where she and her mother were staying overnight.

The friend, Crystal Webber, confirmed for the New Haven Register in Sunday's edition that the little girl died Friday afternoon.

During the early morning hours of July 25, a loud boom could be heard when Janiya apparently pulled the TV down from a small table. She was found trapped underneath it.

My two Sony LCD's in our vacation home have a webbed strap to fasten the TV to the stand to prevent this type of accident. All those with small children should do the same.

My kids knew from the moment our big HDTV entered our house to not get within 3 feet of it. I don't think I've had to warn them about getting near it or touching since the first week.

This story is crazy, as most new TVs barely weigh enough to crush a bug let alone a person. Also, did that kid stay trapped under the TV and for how long? When they heard the crash did they run out immediately or wait till later to see what happened?

A large CRT TV weighs on the order of 150+ pounds (at least my 31" Trinitron does). When our young granddaughters visit we place the 19" TV in their room on the floor rather than on top of the AV cabinet where it normally sits.

I don't see anything in the linked article that says the TV that killed the girl was a CRT or a flat-panel.

yah, these sad storie have been around for years with many types of TVs and/or unstable furniture.

Bottom line anything heavy enough - including even shelf systems should be secured from falling

My LG (46" LCD) has fittings to hook a strap to the top to make it stable, but we wall mounted the TV anyway (mostly for space reasons and the ability to adjust the viewing angle).
