I have two HDVR2 Series2 DVRs that have gone through lock up/reboot issues all day today.
Looking at the system settings, it appears a service data update was pushed down at 3 a.m. this morning.

Is this the dreaded "kill the old receivers" rumor coming to life???

Just kidding on the above.
However, this problem affects two of my oldest receivers, both Series 2 (one RCA branded and another Hughes branded). My R10 and two HR21s appear unaffected.
Any ideas? Or, should I wait for DirecTV to push another update down to fix?

Service Data Downloads happen every morning. They, basically, are just the Showcase features.
It has nothing to do with your issue.

My hdvr2 also locks-up once a week (usually during Top Gear on Monday night) but my dvr-40 is fine. I am re-capping the power supply on Monday and we will see if it has any effect but I honestly think it is something that they are sending in the data stream that the older series 2 units can't handle. I doubt there will be any type of fix from D*tv. There just isn't enough old units out there having issues and I doubt they care in any way shape or form.

I replaced all of the capacitors on the HDVR2's power supply and it still locked up a little after 8pm (8:21p) like it has done for the last few weeks. That's a new drive and a recapped PS if you are keeping score.

I'm also having this issue on my Hughes HDVR2 with an upgrade to 187 hours. My wife states that it locks up at least 3 times a week requiring a press of the reset button. When it's locked she has no audio/video on the screen. nothing on this device has changed to my knowledge. It has software 6.4a-01-2-151 and maybe 5 hours worth of recordings on it as my wife has stopped using it due to these issues. Any advise would be great, thanks!

Try a 'clear and delete all'. If that doesn't fix it, most likely the hard drive has bad sectors on it. You can buy one and load it yourself, or a pre-imaged drive from the site sponsor.
