So You Think You Can Dance "Top 6 Performances" 7/30/2008 *spoilers*

here we go....EDIT in an hour I jumped the gun! Only 1 hour tonight apparently. 1st hour is a repeat of the results show.

Okay now we are starting for real this time!

Guest judge is Adam Shankman this week.

Courtney and Mark dance #1 Viennese Waltz: I thought it was pretty good. Dance #2 Jazz: A bit on the odd side but I enjoyed it. I think Twitch is in serious trouble. I really wanted him in the finals but Mark is really stepping up his game. Also Courtney did really awesome too.

Chelsie - 1-888-TEMPO-01- Solo: it was better than her usual solo but still pretty weak.

Twitch - 1-888-TEMPO-02- Solo: Entertaining as usual from Twitch as usual. Oh God I can't believe Cat did that with the spit filled Twitch grill! EWWWWWW!

Katee and Joshua dance #1 Contemporary: WOW Katee is amazing and Josh is good too! Very nice. Katee is for sure in the finals. I would think Josh is too. Dance #2 Paso Doble: Wow both did very nice with this one. Very hot as Nigel would say!

Chelsie and Twitch dance #1 Mambo: Wow Twitch looked kind of bad/uncomfortable there to me. Chelsie was held back on that one. He did the best he could though. Dance #2 Hip-Hop: It was pretty good. Not my favorite one but not bad either.

Katee - 1-888-TEMPO-03- Solo: A good solo, very nice. She's really separating herself from the other girls and some guys.

Joshua - 1-888-TEMPO-04- Solo: It took a while to get off the ground but once it did it was good.

Courtney - 1-888-TEMPO-05- Solo: Her solos are nice but a lot of rinse and repeat. Still better than Chelsie's solo.

Mark - 1-888-TEMPO-06- Solo: I'm sorry just not into Mark's quirky solos.

I hate to say it but I think Twitch is in the bottom and going home and maybe Chelsie or Courtney. Mark really stepped up his game and Katee was great as usual. Joshua was great too.

Courtney & Mark
Viennese Waltz - Jason Gilkison - Now, this was one of the better waltzes we've seen this season. Very well choreographed, the rise & fall was *there*, the movement was beautiful, and they made it look effortless, which is as it should be. I absolutely enjoyed this number. (Hated the music, but can't have everything).

Jazz - Sonya - So someone 'splain me the difference between jazz and contemporary. Is it just the jazz hands? I liked the routine, it was interesting, it was quirky, it was fun, it had a LOT of energy, and they clearly connected...but what made it jazz?

Katee & Joshua
Contemporary - Tyce Diorio If it's contemporary, they stage MUST be blue. Wow. Another beautiful performance. Katee is simply gorgeous to watch, and Joshua is no slouch either - his support of her and the strength that it took to be there for her was amazing.

Paso Doble - Jason Gilikson Ahhh, a traditional Paso. No dueling matador/matadoress. LOVED her costume. Hated the music. But wow. Again with the strength and the power and the lines. I think these two are the top two. I'm just consistently blown away watching them.

Chelsea & Twitch
Mambo - Tony & Melanie-Yah, latin music. she's pulling faces. At least there's footwork. The drop wasn't grabbing me, and I just think they were the weakest of the first 3 dances. I didn't see this as all that.

Hip Hop - Tabitha & Napoleon Ok this was another fun routine. Lots of personality and they really connected, I think they pulled this off really well. I enjoyed this one too.


Solos:
Chelsea - Ooh, she should not have used those stairs, she looked very uncomfortable. Eh. Not loving her solo. Lots of walking. A few spins. Shook her hips.

Twitch - His solo was fun. :) I loved how he brought the music to the props, it was just uplifting to watch.

Katee - Oh, I wanted to love her solo, and I just didn't. Gorgeous lines, but WAY too much standing still, and she looked like she wasn't "on" her music.

Joshua - Solo was ok. One of the better ones this evening, in fact, but not spectacular and not wowing me.

Courtney - Well, I think Courtney had the best solo of the girls, but that may be damning with faint praise. I didn't think any of the girls were outstanding in their solos.

Mark - I just don't like his style, and he can't pull off the shirtless thing like Will could. I'm sure it was a good solo, I just can't get past the fauxhawk and the jerky movement.

I think Mark and Chelsea deserve to go this week. It's definitely more difficult this week, but I think Courtney is still a better dancer than Chelsea.

This whole show was a pleasure to watch- I think everyone did a very good job.
I've been a Joshua fan since I saw his audition and have continued to be impressed with him and tonight was just icing on the cake- wowser. He and Katee together just work- they balance each other out nicely. His body just blows me away and if I don't stop here it'll turn non family friendly really quickly :o He is simply powerful all over.

Twitch is in trouble I think. He's been unable to adapt to the degree that Joshua and Mark have- Mark really put everything he had into last night and it paid off bigtime.
The girls are harder, and I haven't a clue who will go, but surely not Katee.

I was more impressed by Mark than I thought I would be. Ditto Courtney. I loved their Viennese Waltz. This was the first time this style has been used that I could tell it was a waltz! And it was beautiful. :)

I thought Joshua and Katee were the best of the night. The Paso Doble by Joshua was stunning...he was so masculine. And shirtless Joshua is almost as good as shirtless Will. ;) I definitely like the new ballroom choreographer!

I am pretty liberal and I love when the girls dance in skimpy clothing and I think the "spanks" are as far as it should go but poor Courtney was basically dancing in panties.

This is the part of the competition I hate I think they should crown a male and female dancer as the winners not just one.

With all that said if Katee or Josh go home tonight then this season is a complete loss and a discredit to the dance world. I only say all that because of Will last week.

I'm one of those that Nigel mentioned last night who watches for the entertainment (I get my education in these entertaining threads :p). I'm really going to hate seeing anyone get voted off tonight. :(

I'm not sold on Katee as much as the judges are every week. Her solos are always boring and uninspired. She is like Comfort in that she needs choreography.

Amazing how one person can make such an impact. Watching this week, I really missed getting to watch Will dance.

Performances, in general, were all good. Chelsie and Twitch's mambo was a bit weak (on the Twitch side of things). The praise that surprised me was for Joshua in the pasa doble: he had the attitude, and acted the part beautifully, but I thought his line was bouncy, and clunky in parts.

Overall, it was a terrific evening for everybody. Courtney and Mark were the surprise for me: Great partnership, and they complimented each other well.

Have no idea who will be voted off. Joshua, Courtney, and Twitch had great solos... others were sort of 'meh.'

I meant to bring that up! The worst was during the Passe Doble (I think) when the camera just kept spinning around and around around the dancers.

As for the waltz, I wish they would bring on as choreographers Ben Ermis and Shalene Archer-Ermis, the American Smooth Champions.

Some awful lighting and camera work: TURN OFF THE DAMN STROBE LIGHT, please.

I thought the lighting and camera work in some of the earlier seasons has been superb (in particular, Hok and Jamie's hummingbird-flower routine by Wade).

But this season seems especially bad. It's gotten to the point that on Thursday nights after the results show is over, I'm happy to switch to the other TiVo and watch America's Best Dance Crew on MTV.

ABDC is more fun than SYTYCD's results show because:
1) we get to see Shane Sparks and
2) the dancing is great when the crews kill it and
3) YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE THE DAMN DANCING.

Thank goodness I don't have to choose, because the way things are now, I'd be seriously tempted to blow off the SYTYCD results to watch ABDC. (It repeats a gazillion times during the week, but the Guide Data is whack, and on later shows they gunk up the broadcast with pop-up video and other stuff. Watching the Saturday repeat with the commentary from the dancers is cool, but it's not recommended for a first viewing of those routines.)
