Jack Maynard was played by Russ Tamblin. You might remember him from Cabin Boy, he was the shark-man. :) But most folks 'round here would remember his daughter Amber more. Amber Tamblyn?

So instead of discussing this episode, we'll just look at her.

That is a VERY good picture of Amber...
Makes this appropriate for a 200th post here. :)

Damn... She growed up nice....:) I like her as a redhead. Sure is different from her JoA days.

When you're a Jet,
You're a Jet all the way
From your first cigarette
To your last dyin' day.
When you're a Jet,
If the spit hits the fan,
You got brothers around,
You're a family man!
You're never alone,
You're never disconnected!
You're home with your own:
When company's expected,
You're well protected!
Then you are set
With a capital J,
Which you'll never forget
Till they cart you away.
When you're a Jet,
You stay a Jet!
Of course there was his stunning turn in War of the Gargantuas as well.
But he was also good in Twin Peaks.

When I saw the last name, I figured he was her father. A radio station here was interviewing Amber and she was quite insulted that they had no idea who her father was (not that I did either). He has done a lot of Broadway but only secondary characters in other media.

Uuhhhhhhmmmm, he was one of the leads in West Side Story (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0055614/)

Thanks to the lurker's guide, I know now how to spell this, and how to make it..if I ever want to:
Bagna Cauda (from Jeff Smith's -The Frugal Gourmet-)
1/2 cup olive oil
1/4 lb. butter (1 stick) - not margarine!
5 cloves garlic, finely chopped
6 anchovy fillets, mashed
black pepper
Heat oil and butter together in top of double boiler. In a small skillet cook the garlic in a bit of this oil until soft. Add the anchovies, and cook till the fish turns into a paste, about 5 min. Mix this paste with the hot oil and butter. Transfer to a chafing dish or fondue pot to keep warm on the table (it congeals as it cools.)
What gets me is Franklin went off on the salt in the anchovies, but not on the fats in the butter. :)

I love Bagna Caulda. I make it at home, or go to the Stinking Rose in L.A. or S.F. when I'm up there to get it. But unlike th eshow it is not intended as a fondue type dip/cooking thing. It is intended to use the cloves of Garlic as a spread on bread, crackers etc...
Roasting the garlic gets rid of a lot of the bitterness and makes it very mellow and oh so delicious....

That's because Garibaldi had the low-sodium diet, not the low-fat diet. Sheridan had low fat, and while he didn't specifically say so, it looks like Ivanova had a high protein diet (she was whining about how she'd gain weight). When they swapped their foods, each got their own preference... heh.
What I find hilarious is you've all taken my lead and not discussed the episode. Or the plot, anyway. :P

The plot was interesting, and shows the dangers of hyperspace travel. It really did build some good backstory for Sheridan.

"Food plan. Whatever."
THAT got a chuckle out of me.
A good team player doctor would have eaten with them, and shown he was on his own diet..food plan, and that he wasn't just singling them out.
It was a good episode, and nudged the plot along nicely :)

I really like this episode alot.
Pluses:
Written by D.C. Fonatana
Russ Tamblyn as Captain Maynard.
Franke's score, especially his theme for the Cortez.
The concept of the Explorer class ships.
A good long look at travel and the dangers in Hyperspace.
Bagna Cauda
Sheriden's feelings of being grounded.
Ivanova calling Sheriden on his attitude.
Sheriden and Delenn have their first talk about "star stuff".
Minuses:
I'm not sure why the Cortez couldn't have launched a Star Fury or shuttle to assist Keffler. Perhaps it was too dangerous for another ship to be out there?
And on a personal level, I've played poker with Commander Galus (R.I.P.)

I think the reason the Cortez did not want to launch a starfury is with them being off the beam, it would've been to risky for a SF to be out there since it might get swept away in the hyperspace currents.

OK, overall I liked this episode a lot - I would say it's one of my favorites so far. The situations and characters seemed more "real" to me than in the past. Dr Franklin is really growing on me as well.
Comments:
"You know that feeling like somebody's just walked on your grave?" And then Ivanova nods enthusiastically - "Oh yeah, I know that feeling!"
And how do you move at a right-angle to something traveling in 3 dimensions?
Hunter Green

The geometry of it doesn't make a lot of sense, sure. There's an infinite number of right angle vectors to any vector in three-dimensional space. I just assume there's more to the explanation that we weren't burdened with because any pilot would know what the other pilot meant.

Yup, that's where I remember him from too. Actually, besides that and B5, I don't think I've seen him in anything else.

This episode wasn't really working for me until the Shadows ship appeared in hyperspace, then it got interesting. Up until then, I felt like they were just going through the motions on a ho-hum story. Russ Tamblin's acting was sub-par, and his crew was even worse. I was joking to myself that I hoped they died in hyperspace as punishment for their bad acting. Then they send in the worst actor of all, Keffer! I'm like yeah, kill them all! Of course I knew Keffer was going to survive since he's in the opening credits. Sorry to harp on the poor acting, but that is still my biggest problem with this show.
I thought the doctor changing everyone's diets thing was annoying. Why exactly was he so obsessive about that? I kind of tuned out on that story.
I did like Orwell, the guy that helped Garibaldi get the supplies. I hope we see more of him.
Two episodes without G'Kar? I wish Londo and/or G'Kar were in every episode. Lennier too is becoming one of my favorite characters. I just about busted a gut when he got into that martial arts stance in the season premiere.
One more thing, what is up with Delenn's bone head? Her hair goes under it?!?! How does that work?

The bone is now raised off her head and had just three anchor points, one on each end and one in the middle. There's a gap between the bone and the skull.
