Is there a website that has IR remote code info that could be transmitted to an IrDA device connected to a PC? If not I think one would be useful.

If the IrDA device had enough output, you could control your Audio/Video devices from your PC. If your PC were not located such that it would be a convenience for you, you could still use it to program a learning remote.

In Fry's I looked at IrDA devices which connect to a USB port. Some only had a range of six feet. With a USB extension cable you could locate the IrDA device close enough to operate your A/V stuff.

Does anyone else see usefulness in this idea?

Such devices do exist. As for a database of codes, you can get Philips Pronto codes at remotecentral.com and the Pronto hex format is very popular for interchange.

Generally, IR control from a PC is done for the purpose of HTPC (Home Theater PC) applications, to change the channel on a cable or satellite box - just like a TiVo does.

It's not clear to me what you're trying to accomplish. Perhaps a form of whole-house automation a la Crestron?

It's just that every time I'm sitting in the La-Z-Boy with my wireless mouse and keyboard connected to my laptop, and someone leaves a commercial blaring, and there are no remotes in reach, I wish I could mute the TV with my laptop.
(Right now the laptop has a broken screen and it is connected to a monitor - but the keyboard is cooler than the laptop and I would use it anyway.)

Would you consider using PC speakers for sound instead of the TV speakers? My wireless keyboard has a wonderful mute button. :)
