Have an old Frankenstein pc with a pile of drives put together with scraps that I use for tivo desktop. Has gigs and gigs of pictures, and home videos (older in SD but newer in HD), and music. Probably a couple hundred gigs all told.
It’s getting old and long in the tooth. (motherboard cpu overheat alarm keeps going off and it's getting slower and slower)
Looking to get something new that’s like a home media repository that will play nice with tivo.
I’ve vaguely paid attention to vista home server and vista media center and a bunch of other things like that but didn’t pay enough attention to know what to do.
Should I just get a 399 desktop with vista home and stuff my raid card and drives in it.
Or should I be looking at one of these ‘media server’ machines?
My router actually will take drives and can serve ftp and upnp media server- so I could just stick a big drive on that and be all set for my home needs- but that wouldn’t work anyway with the tivodesktop- right?
Right now I use windows syc tool powertoy (forget exact name) to duplicate the photos on another pc so i have copies of all that. But longer term would like some backup solution too for my home movies.
any advice much appreciated.
