With the extremely slow response of the menus (compared to the s2) and the addition of the youtube feature what are the chances that the s3 will be able to use a wireless keyboard? Using the remote is a bit of a pain to type in your favorite youtube site, search for movies on amazon, etc?

Would this be a simple firmware update? Or would the entire device need to be overhauled?

I have a wireless bluetooth keyboard with a dongle that I have used on my PC, don't know how simple it would be to allow for this to be used on the tivo. I am sure that if tivo made their own keyboards there would be a market for them.

Keyboard support may not be as easy as you think, especially for a Bluetooth one, as they'd also have to write a Bluetooth stack, USB connection doesn't provide an HID interface.

To add keyboard support, in general, they'd first need redo the character entry screens to read from a keyboard buffer, then write a keyboard buffer to read from a USB HID device, or an IR keyboard.

It is possible someone could develop a Network Based keyboard that works off an Iphone or what not. There is already an Iphone remote app for TiVo. It doesn't have keyboard on it yet, but its possible. There is a program that makes use of the same Telnet network control interface that allows you to type from you your computer/laptop now onto the tivo.

So if you want to use a third party app, or update the one on an Iphone it's possible now.

As for an officially supported version from TiVo, it may or may not happen. However, and that atricle that recently was posted about the history of the TiVo remote, they hinted at they were looking at the idea of a keyboard.

could be wrong but i beleive someone DID take that telnet thing and creat a keyboard app for the apple to use it.

It doesn't pass characters directly but remembers where you are and translates your letter choise into the appropriate commands (up up up left left enter) to make it happen.

Yeah, I've used it the last few days for Swivel Search. Of course, I have my TV in view from the PC, which is a requirement. If you do, it works great as a workaround for a real keyboard, certainly a lot faster than using the remote.
