So I wouldn't normally bother about this as I don't think Tivo owes me anything but...

I read somewhere here or on another forum that after Tivo brought the lifetime subscription back recently for the Series3/HD models that there were people getting upgrades from there 3 year subscription to the lifetime for the $100 difference in the subscription prices.

Has anyone actually had this done or was someone blowing smoke?

Lifetime was brought back period. It wasn't just for the S3 models, it was and is available for any SA Tivo.

I've read posts from people claiming that they got the deal you mention, but I see a lot more that say they were offered lifetime at regular price that would "kick in" when the current commitment period ends. You'll have to make a call to Tivo for yourself to see what they offer.

Yeah I did call. They said I would have to pay full price. They did say that if I found instances of others getting the upgrade they could offer it to me as well. I'm looking for testimonials from people that received the upgrade.

As I recall, the people who bought lifetime and paid the $100 difference were still in the 30-day cancellation period for their subscription. Basically they canceled the subscription and replaced it with a lifetime subscription.

I had paid for 3 yr. service on our HD Tivo in April. When I saw that lifetime was re-instated on this board, I called, was given a refund of my 3 year payment and then billed for lifetime. I was just under the 30 day refund timeframe so that may be a difference.

I have some time today. I'm going to give it a try, but I doubt I'll have success. As it stands my S3 was 3 years for 299.00 which is the regular price I believe for a two year subscription. However I might still do it. I will try to see if I can somehow get them to count my 299.00. I'll let you know what happens.

That is exactly why you were able to do this.

I didn't try. My CFO, othewise known as my wife drilled me on some specifics like how long our extened warranty is, is there another TiVo coming out, how long was it between Series 2 and 3? Bottom line is she gave the veto.

But I probably wouldn't have got it even if I tried from what you guys say.

I was able to get lifetime and not continue through the rest of my commitment but I didn't get any special price (except that I no longer had to pay the $6.95 for two years).

So I saved money assuming that I would have other wise paid the monthly fee then had to pay full price to switch to lifetime.

I have the same current setup on my TivoHD with $6.95 a month with another two years left in it. In the Tivo online account maintenance, they have the option to add the lifetime service, but it specifically states that it will kick in at the end of the 3 year committment. So, I guess I can pay monthly for the next two years and then jump to the lifetime.

I called the week that the offer started and talked to someone. I have heard since then people not being able to do what I was able to do. So apparently I got lucky. At the time I didn't think much of it. I had forgotten that I had a multi-year commitment until I talked to the rep. She said something to the effect of "Of course this will end your 3 year contract, but that shouldn't be an issue." Which was when I remembered that I had a contract.

As she said it I thought "Well it shouldn't be an issue I am giving you a large chunk of money. :)" but I have heard people argue both ways about how TiVo should or should not let people out of their commitment in order to let them buy a lifetime service deal.

In my case it resulted in another TiVo HD and lifetime purchase, so I think they did OK.
