Did they update the internals or something? I got one for $79 from circuit city a couple of months ago because it was being discontinued but I see its still being sold.

Yeah circuit city dropped the price to $279 and after the $200 rebate it came out to $79. It was a little more with tax but when all was said and done it ended up costing me around $50 because I sold the iPod shuffle I got with the tivo rewards points I earned for signing up this box. When I found out about this sale I was already 3 days late. I called like 20-25 stores and only one store had one left. It was an hour away from me. When I got there they told me they couldn't find it and that it was probably sold. I asked them to check again, they did and it was in the back room all dusty. I was smiling the whole way home.

I've never seen in the stores here even when they were just released, so I have no idea. :)

The original 250GB S3 isn't being manufactured any more. What you are seeing sold is leftover stock.
The $200 rebate that Tivo keeps reupping is designed to help vendors clear out their final stock of S3 units.
Vendors have only slowly let the price fall and it's a pretty hard sell when the Tivo HD goes for so much less with near equivalent capabilities.

But tivo's website has them back in stock. They were out of stock for a while but now their not.

Hrmm, I spoke to soon. Found reference to limited production run of new units. I'd link the thread, but apparently the hosting forum isn't allowed here.

You got a Series 3 for $79?? Makes me feel like an idiot for paying over $400 for a refurb less then a year ago...sheesh

I was one of the lucky ones that was able to get an S3 from Circuit City in Feb at a bit less than $300. So with the $200 rebate, it ended up costing me a net amt of $100. This was the only way I would have been able to buy it, as their retail price was way over the top for me. Then add in the lifetime that I purchased at the time @ $399 (have an adjustment rqst pending for the $299 rate).
You can still find them for alot less than the $799 retail rate, but you have to really put some effort into it. It seems odd to me that Best Buy, for example, still has their price for these units at the top retail price of $799.
