Any Series 2 will work with a Dish satellite receiver. A Series 2 dual tuner will work as a single tuner unless you feed it basic cable.
No Series 3 works with satellite. They work with cable and/or OTA only.

I have a Tivo SD DVR 40 Series 2 receiver. You claim that this receiver will work with the Dish Network. I currently have Directv but I believe that I am paying too much. Dish claims that it will give me Americas top 250 for $39.95 for one year.
So if I have Dish reinstall their system, what if anything will I have to do to get this Tivo to work.
I got this message the other day:
Stephen, we had DishNetwork with our Tivo for about a year and they worked fine together. You just have to setup the IR remote extensions so the Tivo can control the Dish receiver.
What does he mean by the IR remote extension? Thanks Steve Zimmett

The SD-DVR40 is a DirecTV DVR that happens to run TiVo software, not a TiVo DVR. It doesn't have A/V inputs, just satellite RF inputs that accept only DirecTV signals.
A Standalone TiVo Series 2 will work with Dishnetwork just fine.
By IR remote extensions, it is meant IR blasters, which come with Standalone TiVos.

That's not what he was talking about.
The IR gadgets that need to be set up are described as "controlling the Dish receiver".
These would be the IR blasters that a stand-alone TiVo (Series 1 or 2) can use to control a satellite receiver or cable box, telling such a box to change channels.
It's a part of the TiVo. Not a feature of the Dish receiver.
As a side point, why did you say "Thanks"? Doesn't sound like you're the one who sent the message he was talking about. You don't even know what the "IR remote extensions" are.

I'm thinking about purchasing another Tivo as backup. If I purchase one from say Ebay, can I still use the same access card that I currently have?
Also, if I go to Tivo and get a new system, would I have to pay them their $13.00 monthly fee or do I still use Directv and avoid his charge?

best to ask this in the directTV forum and be clear on if you want a Standalone TiVo or a DirecTV TiVo powered DVR
