View Full Version : Local HD channels on Tivo HD?

Just hooked up my Tivo HD and transfered service from my old s2. No cable cards yet, It'll be a few weeks before i get those sorted out, I'm still on a basic analog cable package ATM anyway.
If I hook my cable directly into the TV, I get the analog channels I normally get, as well as the local OTA broadcast channels in HD via clear QAM.
When I hook the cable into the Tivo though, I'm only getting the analog channels - not the local OTA broadcast channels in HD via clear QAM. I understand these channels are not supposed to show up in the tivo guide, but is there a way to tune to them directly? I'd like to be able to watch the normal broadcast channels in HD through the tivo.
(p.s. this has probably already been answered here, forum search function is not that good though so I wasn't able to easily find anything on this...)

After you finish Guided Setup, you need to go back in and do a channel scan to pick up the digital clear QAM stations.

Nice. That did it for the most part. Thx!

How do you do the channel scan? Will you see the stations on a CRT TV?

Press TiVo -> Messages & Settings -> Settings -> Channels -> Channel Scan (Cable). Note that that option will only show up if you don't have CableCARDs - if you do, the channel map provided by the cards is always used, and can't be overridden. And yes, if you select them on a TiVo, they'll show up on any TV. However, if by "on a CRT TV", you mean a conventional TV, they'll only show up on a TV sans TiVo if (a) the channel in question is analog, or (b) the TV in question has an integrated QAM tuner for receiving unencrypted digital cable programming. Also the available digital channels will vary depending on what your provider leaves unencrypted.

My Tivo HD, no cablecards, has scanned my cable for unencrypted QAMs. It finds only one local broadcast HD channel and one cable barker/welcome channel. However, I know the QAM channel numbers of some additional channels and I can view them if I enter the channel number directly.
Of course there is no guide info for any of these.
I have never been able to figure out what causes some unencrypted QAMs to be found in the scan and others to not be found. The PSIP info being passed by the cable is somewhat inconsistent and may be a factor.
This has not been a big issue for me since this Tivo is in the bedroom. My main Tivo is a S3 with cablecards and finds all the appropriate channels via the cable company channel map sent to the cablecards.
Anybody know what causes the inconsistent channel scans on the Tivo HD?

I have a basic cable (channels 1-12, plus several others, costs $14/mo). My TV gets CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox in HD. I have bought a before and it didn't seem to get any HD channels. I guess I didn't do it right.
So if I hook up TivoHD (the one with the 160GB drive) to regular cable (no cablecard) and do a channel scan it should pick up the 4 basic channels in HD, right?

Yes, the TiVo should pick up the same channels as your TV. Lack of guide data severely limits the functionality of the TiVo on those channels, however.
