no, you would have to wait until your contract was up before you switched.

So - I just can't call them up and say I'd like to buy a lifetime sub?

I tried to do that maybe 6-7 months into my 3-year msd contract. They would not do it.
At that time, they were only offering lifetime for current customers and it was $399. My MSD rate on the unit in question is $6.95/month.
So they said no to keeping the amount I had already paid them PLUS $399 now. Instead, they wanted to keep 6.95/month which after 3 years would come to only a bit over $250.
The obvious assumption they are making is that I will either renew service on that unit, or buy a new TiVo and start new service at that time.
